Re: Yellow Peril Fixer Upper
A few of us are planning a trip to the Ace Cafe in London in April, Easter actually. My plan is to take this baby.
Need to have her in peak condition for that trip. Everything that needs to be done will get done.
Will go on a few trips of increasing duration over here before we leave the island, just to make sure all is ok.
The plan is to stay off the Motorways and explore some of the lesser travelled parts of Wales and England.

I am going to give the top of the engine a clean down and hit it with some engine enamel. Just to clean it up a bit.
The water pipes will be coming off for a cleaning and painting, and a new thermostat too.
Will check through the temperature sensor and fan switch.
There is some corrosion on the connections so these will all get attended to also.

Re: Yellow Peril Fixer Upper
One problem i see is the water pump. There is a damp oily spot at the bottom of the engine, and sometimes a telltale oil spot on the ground.
This is good enough reason for me to replace the water pump, as this oil is most likely from the weep hole.

Re: Yellow Peril Fixer Upper
This water pump is the older type with the plastic impeller.
The front cover has been opened at some stage as the screws are hex heads.
I am not over the moon about the oil drain plug that is fitted.
The square flats indicate to me that this is a plumbing plug, most likely with a tapered thread.
I have not tried to remove it yet, but I will have to soon to drain the oil.
I fear that the threads have been ruined, maybe I will need a replacement front cover.

I do have a set of front cover socket head screws in Stainless Steel.
I got these from Robin1731 with some stuff I bought from him a while back.

If you do not have a spare front cover, then perhaps a thread insert to restore the threads. But honestly I bet you have a spare. Robin's bolts are nice, used them on BADDOG.

Well, actually I do have a couple of spare engines, so the front cover could be donated by one of them if needed.

I focused some attention on the exhaust system, which had a few repairs done in the past.

After removal of the bandage, which seemed to be simply stuck on with some kind of bonding material
I cut back the rotted metal. I measured the wall thickness of some of the removed material to be slightly over 1mm, so I am guessing the original was maybe 1.2mm

Re: Yellow Peril Fixer Upper
The left side header attachment has snapped off. I decided to study this and see how they were made.
When I looked into the end of the tube I could see this ring inside.

Re: Yellow Peril Fixer Upper
I figure that there was a socket made up during manufacture that fitted into the inside of the muffler tube.
I had a go at slicing through the weld and sure enough, I could see a joint where there was a tube inside a tube.
I got a pointed tool in and managed to seperate the 2 tubes.

Re: Yellow Peril Fixer Upper
I took a bunch of measurements, and I came up with this.
I know a guy that makes exhausts and he has a hydraulic machine to expand pipes, so I will pay him a visit.

Re: Yellow Peril Fixer Upper
Refreshed the paint a bit on the top of the engine. Carefully masked off where i did not want to paint.
It turned out OK I think.
