poor mans bagger build

#1

Post by 5speed »

I was going to take pics of my project and when it was completed, post them in here...
But..if my build goes like it started...it could be a few years before it's done.
I'm going to turn my 76 into what I have named my "poor mans bagger".
When I bought the 78 project bike it came with the saddle bags, trunk and crash bars with highway pegs.
So..I decided to put the bags on my 76 and turn it into my "long ride" bike.
So..I began the mock up today and right off the bat discovered the previous owner had modified the mounting bars for the bags.

I thought the frames were the same but apparently the passenger foot pegs are in a different location.
**disclaimer** I bought my welder a couple of months ago and haven't used a wire feed welder ever and haven't welded anything since shop class.
I tried to channel my Grandfather through the welder (he was a professional for 39 years) but that didn't work. lol
The "evidence".

lol. that looks a lot like my welding. In my meager experience (I usually have my son weld for me now...he's dang good), the splatter you got in the first picture sometimes results from poor surface prep. I'm sure there are other contributors, but sometimes setup/prep/setup/prep are the difference.

I may recruit my nephew..he's a heavy equipment mechanic.
I cleaned the surface pretty good..or so I thought.
According to my owners manual the wrong wire speed will cause sporadic welds. I played around with that and the spatter wasn't as bad.
I need to buy welding gloves though. lol

Soooo
I discovered why he modified the brackets...
I need part of the mounting system and went out to determine what brand saddle bags they are to see if the part is available...
They are OEM Kawasaki bags...

I resemble that splatter! Nothing like a wire feed welder from harbor freight.... or is that fright?

I think it is somewhere on the space ship enterprise.... next to the Heisenberg compensators.... but I am not certain (if only I knew where I was....)

Well..did some tinkering on the 76 yesterday and today.
Got the front fender swapped out for one off an 1100.
I also removed the bolts in the rear fender and lowered it..one of the few things on the 1000's I think is ugly as sin..the huge gap between the fender and rear wheel.
That created a gap between the fender and seat but it isn't as bad as I thought it would be.
Also mocked up one of the saddle bags. It's going to take some fabrication to get the brackets to work but I like the look.
I have a second rear fender which I will modify which will involved filling the holes for the tail light mount as I'm going with one off a newer shadow.

Got a bit more done today. I didn't have to do as much fabrication on the saddle bag brackets as I first thought I would.
I cut one tab off..which allowed the other mounting tab to line up with one of the holes in the helmet lock bracket.
Which coincidentally..the fender mounting hole lined up with. I had to slot the front mounting hole in the fender a bit to get the back hole to line up.
This allowed me to use the original fender mounting bolt..which worked out perfectly as a spacer between the frame and bag bracket.

Image

And here is the bag mocked up. It looks like it is going downhill a bit because the bike is up on the jack and a bit nose heavy.

Image

Tomorrow I hope to get the other bracket modified and the other bag mounted.
Then the next step will be to order a batwing fairing and fab mounts for it. If I can't convince "she who must be obeyed" that it is the perfect Christmas present..it will be the new year before I order that. lol
