No rust on the plugs. They were dry. But the carbs have been off and although the intake holes were covered, the bike was stored in a leaky barn where the cloth coverings could have been wet off and on over the years.

I'll give it until I get the tank cleaned up - another week or so - and this weekend I will add a little atf and acetone to the soup that is already inside.

Further investigation. Number two intake valve is open and number four exhaust valve is open so moisture could have seeped into those two cylinders. I am going to concentrate on those cylinders since the bike was also on the side stand while it was stored.

Two starters were dropped off for me as possibles for this bike from the fellow who left it at my place. One had been opened and in fact the brushes and plate were removed. The other doesn't work so I will be opening it and rebuilding it.

I am getting ahead of myself since the engine is still not loose, but I have a question. Someone has pulled the clutch switch wires out of the switch. What does this switch actually do and should this circuit be open or closed if I choose to eliminate it?

Missed this question when you posted it, sorry. The switch on the clutch lever is one of two safety features (the other is the neutral switch) so the bike can't be started in gear and engaged... I can't remember which way to bypass it, though, sorry.

So have you broken the engine loose yet?

To bypass the switch, just jumper (connect) the two wires that go back to the harness together.

Mark! :oldies You need to replace that compromised clutch switch assembly. No Elimination Allowed!
Think of stalling the engine at a busy intersection, in gear. Remember how difficult it is to find neutral when you need it, immediately?
That clutch lever switch assembly is still available from Honda Parts, easily replaced, and the last time I checked approximately 10 USD.

Although the OEM Honda on-line parts catalog calls it a front stop switch, for our GL1000 application it's a clutch switch assembly.
When you open the catalog, look at the page titled HANDLE LEVER@CABLE@SWITCH and under line item 11 you should find this info.-

011 SWITCH, FR. STOP 35340-329-003 001 $12.89 $9.64

Yeah, boy. A man could kill himself inadvertantly hitting the starter with a bike in gear. (Agreed it's an easy fix. But, the question was asked and I answered it).

To me, a sidestand lockout switch is a far more practical safety feature - and didn't show up until the 1500's, I think.

Belated Merry Christmas and all the best for 2018 to everyone. Progress report on this machine. There is no progress. After two and a half months of squirting fluids into the cylinders, it is still not turning over and now with the bitter cold we are having I am going to lay off for a few weeks. Then I think it will be time for a new strategy that involves removing parts. The previous owner, who never turned it over, says be filled the cylinders with oil when he got the bike several years ago. So if it is seized pistons, they must be quite magnificently seized. I am hoping it is something else easy to fix. Stay tuned. Cheers.

Most likely at this point you will have to pull the heads, probably should anyway. I have had two that were gunked up pretty bad in the number 4 cylinder and the only real solution is to scrape it out and do the best you can to polish the cylinder back into "usable". The valves will almost certainly need to be cleaned up and lapped.

Yikes. I think it's time for Krud Kutter & Metal Rescue & PB Blaster & a power washer.

Shirking all other responsibilities Sunday I decided to take advantage of the continuing thaw and work on the GoldWing. I dropped it into gear and gently pushed it back and forth trying to get the engine to loosen up. I thought I'd give it a full hour and then start taking it apart to find out why it was stuck. Close to an hour later I thought I saw the belt move a bit and I was getting tired so I backed it deep into the garage, put it in first, and ran it towards the door. I popped the clutch and after a hop and skid it started dumping fluid out of the exhausts and squirted the rest all over the garage through the spark plug holes. I had a mess of ATF to clean up after but a smile on my face. In one of the pics you can see atf between my VTX and the desk where it squirted through the space between the fender and the rad on the VTX. Also splashed some on the windshield of the VTX. So now we go back to the restoration plan. Stripping and cleaning and polishing parts, de-rusting the gas tank, and then the rebuild.
