I'm going to visit my local o-ring dealer this afternoon to get it sorted. Does anyone have the exact measurments for the smaller fuel tube oring?

If it runs beautifully now, with leaking carburetors, I imagine it will then become ravishing after you correct the leaks. ;)

Yes Cliff, those are the ones. I've found and just ordered them from Saber but I have to wait a couple of weeks for delivery and want the bike running now. I need time to test it properly before mot in the end of the month. I discovered that my bike is behaving a bit like a brittish bike. Oil stains on the garage floor. New seals for valve covers is needed. I've got them on the shelf so it's an easy fix. Still need the measurements for the fuel tube o-rings though.

Order some Randakk carb kits from. You'll get the correct parts. Honda carbs use some odd ball sized O-rings. Hard to find the exact ones.

I know I should have bought Randakks kit from the begining, but I did'nt!? New parts are on the way. Everything else in the carbs are new.

I got my hands on a few o-rings, 9x3mm. I’m getting good at installing carb racks! The bike starts fine with no leaks but there are a few things to sort out. It’s burping, sneezing and farts in every direction and can’t idle steady. I have not run it fully warm yet and therefore not been able to get it synched. The idle issue is probably air leak somewhere but the other misbehavior is harder for me. Air mixture screws? Help!

Farting, sneezing and burping solved. Air fuel mixture screws was set to 1 -3/8 out. Wonder who did that?!?. Turned them out to 2.5 and everything got better. While trying to synch it ran hot, the fan didn’t go on. The fan works, I shorted the two wires to the switch and started the fan. I then tested the switch in boiling water but could’nt get the temperature over 100°C. I then tried to heat it carefully with a mini torch and got continuity from it, back in the water it switched off at 99°C. That means it works. Now I’m stuck again.

New try!

I used some mixed up anti freeze that boils at a higher temperature. The switch switches at 104°C and back again at 95°C. So it looks about right. I tested to heat the switch connected to the bike and when it clicks the fan starts and stops after a while when I take the heat away so thats seemes right too. Can the thermostate be the culprit? A new one is installed. Or just bad luck?

Sorted!

In the process of fixing the fan I found out that the brake light did not work. While following the wires on the diagram I found one from the fan going in to the reserv lightning unit. So I made RLU-trick with three wires and got the brake light and the fan to work. Either the RLU and the fan are connected or I misread the diagram but was struck with luck.

New brake pads, new clutch wire and a proper synchronization are the last thing to do, then I am all done.

Next weekend the bike will be judged by the authorities, is it safe enough to be ridden on open roads? I’m feeling certain about it but it’s always a bit nervous. It has been 12 years in hibernation since last road test.

Thought I was done!

Yeaterday was a big day for me and my ”rig”. First time I drove it was to the inspection. A bit nervous but they all loved the bike and it slipped through like a wet soap! Sweet!

Anyhow, while taking a little celebration trip I started to thing about the charging. I’ve never checked the voltage with engine running so I went home to take a reading. Shoved 14.5v on idle and up to 16v at 3000rpm. That is bad news.

Fuel fumes filled the garage too, orings in the petcock was dried out. ( made a mistake and mis spelled petcock on google, DON’T) I found out that the orings between carbs and plenum and carbs are same size.

Back to charging, the black wire from the regulator should show current when charging passen 15v, mine doesn’t. A used regulator is ordered from ebay and also a new reg/rect for cbr 900 on it’s way.

Thats it, to be continued....

Parts race!

Living up north, outside the vintage Honda dealer grid, means waiting. Waiting for parts to arrive everytime something is needed. I ordered a used regulator from Germany, a new ignition switch from UK, a new no-name regulator/rectifier from Poland, petcock gaskets from southern Sweden. Than waiting and watching the package race on different tracking sites.

Poland won, UK ignition switch came second, Germany good third and Swedish shipment seemes to be having big trouble finding it’s way up here.

Since reg/rec and ignition switch were the first parts to arrive they got first to be tried out. Cutting the wires to the old rectifier and unplugging the separate regulator and then soldering and making new connectors following the colours was quick and easy. Ignition switch did not really had to be changed with this setup but it was a bit soft and unreliable and only to bolts away so it’s now changed too.

Multimeter now reads 13.5-14.5v and everything works perfect. Easy job.

100kms test drive and the bike feels like a new bike. Everything is tight and smooth.

Crackhead!?

Sounds dramatic! When the heads were off I spotted a suspect weld in one of the heads. The lower part with a 6mm bolt. There had been a crack that was once welded and looked quite good. I got a bit worried but tried to deny it as much as possible.

Now when my right boot gets all oily I can’t deny it anymore. New used heads are on their way from France so I have a few hours in the garage to do. Lovely!

Absolutely fantastic thread. The tip about the reserve lighting unit stopping the fan from functioning is fantastic. Looking forward to more progress!

Wrong heads!?

Friday I got new heads delivered. Opening the package I found something else. The french gl1000 are maybe twin cylinder bikes. Mine have four cylinders. I got a nice pair of cx500 heads!? The seller had clearly made a small mistake. The right ones are on their way here and due to shipping costs I now have a pair of extra heads for free.
