Concerning my idle problem, I realize, reading the Octane's tip concerning carb rebuilt, that I jumped the idle air jet inspection . . . :IDTS:
Image

I thought one of the primary or secondary main air jets under the vacuum piston was the idle air jet . . .
So, carbs out once again !! shakehands
(and downsizing the jets to 0.98mm dancr )

That is for the off idle stumble. Not an idle issue fix.

You "can" get those out without removing the carbs.

You're right and I don't know yet if my idle problem is because I'm lean or rich or something else (air cut off valve, jet clogged, . . . ) (I didn't received yet my colortune adapter)
One thing is sure from what I experienced since I ride it, the off idle cure will be welcome to smooth the engine reving from idle !

Really want to do the off idle fix on my 77. I’ve read that the jets can be swapped without removing the carbs, but I just don’t see how. And I don’t want to remove the carbs right now. Might be a winter project for me. Let us know how it goes after the swap.

If you guys want the correct drill bit to do the modification pm me your address and I'll send you one.
I ordered one and didn't think it would ever arrive so I ordered a package of 10. lol

Thanks for your proposal 5speed ! :8)
But I'll try to make the mod this afternoon or tomorrow, as I have another trip planned for the next weekend . . .
I'll search in my stock for a suitable drill bit and if I don't have the right size, I'll drill smaller and finish with a jet reamer.

Jets drilled !
As I had a spare carbs bank, I took the 0.60mm main air jets and drilled them till 0.90 (instead of 0.98). No reamer for the moment, I think I'll try this size before reaming bigger later . . .

Some news. Adjusted the idle screws with the colortune, it appears that my 0.90 drilled air idle jet is too small, I obtain a blue flame with only 1/2 turn of idle screw opening, instead of 1 3/4 turn factory setting . . .
And I think my idle problem was that I was too rich at idle and also had a very small float leak at #4 cyl . . .

To be investigated again, carbs to be out in the days to come, to enlarge the 0.9 idle air jet and check if the #4 float is still leaking. . .

The more I think about the idle hot dying problem, the more I believe it could be electrical related :
Engine likes to die at idle when the fan goes in action.
yesterday, when very hot, it fired while cranking and died when the starter button was released

I run 2.2 ohms coils with 1.2 ohm ballast and dyna ignition. Perhaps the coils + ballast doesn't deliver enough voltage at idle when very hot (the coils I mounted are not designed to be used with a ballast) or I have a wiring problem concerning the coils feeding.
I thus ordered dyna coils 3 ohms, and will get rid of this ballast before making further investigations . . .

That is a classic sign of a bad ballast resistor. Good call on the 3ohm coil switch.

I'll investigate the wiring of the coils feeding. With 12V at the battery, do you know how much volt loss is acceptable mesured on the coil primary ?

That's really neat! Many years ago I had a '63 Ford Galaxie with a bad 2nd gear and synchro... At the time I was doing a lot of metal casting, and I melted the bronze synchro ring down to cast into pieces for jewelry. The thing had caused me such a headache, I thought it would be nice to make something pretty with it :).

So, after a few rides, engine running normaly and very pleasant and smooth (thanks to the off idle tip I presume).
No more dying at idle when hot since I get rid of the 2.2 ohms 12v coils and the ballast, soldered some corroded connections on the wiring (near the ballast), and put dyna coils 3 ohms.
To be confirmed during a long ride sunday, about 300 kms of turns on little roads.

And perharps my future winter projet will enter the workshop soon . . . :-D
