Looks good Refugee. I know how to solve your breather problem easy, and look great. You could reverse the radius of the shelter halves to inset
Radius by making a templet, cut the halves out, switch sides with the halves, and turn them inside. Shelter will fold down, and you make the tank look much better, and any filter.
I did the blue tank with a hammer. :-D

Good ideas, WT. Digging that deep into the GL sidecovers would require relocating some of the things that live under there - the radiator overflow for sure. Regulator most likely. I'm not sure I want to sign up for that much body work. I was hoping to get a workable solution without radical changes. My bodywork skills are sketchy at best. The taper on the 750 tank above is what I'm interested in doing. That's the old "Triumph" look that I mentioned in my Weber thread. For sure, the '78/79 covers appear to be a bit wider at the base than the early ones.

Not a bad idea to simply eliminate that connector and splice them. The only time you'd need to separate the wires is if you pull the engine. Not something you do that often...

Your stator will love you.

Naked battery. Probably broke the frail insulation moving the electrics around.

The oil filter was dirty, but contained no metal. This thing might run after all.

I cannot tell a lie. Although I guess it depends on what you consider dialed in - I am not happy with it. I never got the bog cured when you stab the throttle. I have experimented with alternate slow jets and mains. I have tried just about every accelerator pump stroke setting and I have the exhaust valve (pump by-pass) zero'd out. I really need an A/F gauge to get any further.

But, I'm thinking about pulling them and going back to the OEM rack. Fuel economy has tanked with them - 28 to 30 MPG vs. 40-42. The bike smells like my hot rod El Camino (gassy) with open stacks. I really don't want to cut shelter covers to compensate.

...and I have been distracted a bit by another woman...the CBX. However, I probably will swap the stock carbs back on before they go stale and before summer hibernation. I will probably take another stab at it this fall. I'll sort of repeat this confession in my project thread. Not defeated, humbled, but I commend those with the patience and/or luck to get the correct combo with no fuss and bother.

Well that sux. I only bought what Randaak used on his dyno mule. The only difference is our exhaust. I don't have a backup, i must make it run.

A lot of people have been successful. I may be perhaps somewhat less skilled than some and I definitely ran out of patience. It can start to add up quickly if you continue to buy carburetor bits to experiment with different combinations. That's where an A/F sensor would become so valuable. I don't have one.

My bike is completely rideable as it is, I just would never be happy with this level of performance and some of the other things I noted above. Expensive lesson.

Please let us know how you do with your set up. I hope you have better luck than I did!
