82 Gl1100 Interstate

So here is the story on Ol' Crusty my 82 goldwing, it was bought from a fellow co-worker who drove it in the winter for 200 bucks. He sold the sidecar off of it and it hadn't ran since last year and just wanted it gone so I bought it as a project, new battery and it still didn't have power so in went a new ignition switch and bingo the light lit up! But didn't crank, so in went a new starter solenoid and she fired right up, and then I took her around the block a couple of times and left her for a week came back to tinker with her and she wouldn't start. Starter only kicked in for about half a second ever fifth button press, so I left her confused to do some research and came back out about and hour later to a puddle of oil under the front of her. So it looks like something went right where the oil filter and water pump are and thats where I am right now any ideas about the starter or the massive oil leak? Thanks for reading my rant

Does the starter spin, and make a bunch of noise as it slows down? If so, that is your starter clutch that is gummed up. If it isn't spinning at all, I would be looking at grounds and wires associated with the starter system.

No starter spins like a quarter turn every once in a while

Check your grounds and your connections. Being the bike is a little crusty, those would/could get glazed over pretty quick. Don't forget to dust off the other side of the main battery ground, found under the upper engine mount on the left side.

If they are all shined up from a wire brush, and it still doesn't turn, the starters can go bad. Many have taken them carefully apart, cleaned and lubricated them, and they work better. I have replaced two starters on 1100's...
