My take is that if the oil is not changed often enough, or the bike sits a long time without running, or the wrong oil is used, the starter clutch rollers stick. The hole being drilled allows you to clean/lube the rollers. I feel that drilling a hole into a closed oil area will create a place for dirt and water to enter the system. Use the right oil, change it often, and run the bike from time to time,....and a hole is not needed

That may be true. But a little access wont hurt. The access bolt is flush with inside of case and there is no place for dirt to collect. The bolt is sealed with Teflon washer and wont allow oil out or anything in.

First I've seen mention of a washer. But I have owned my 78 since it was almost new, and I have not had that problem. But I have taken apart engines that had flat rollers in the starter clutch, and obvious signs of poor maintenance ......just haven't experienced it my self

Probably should have mentioned it, but I felt that fell into the painfully obvious category. Since I was putting flat bottom bolt on a convex surface and all. :)

Polished and painted linkage. Assembled right side today. Covers are just on for me to get a peek at progress. Waiting on T42015 wheels for tensioners.

Low whistle.
If there is one thing I have learned throughout this process it is this: Check your respirator for spiders before you put it on.
