79 highway machine build
I'll start by confessing that I'm starting a build thread at the end of my build.
I picked up a project gl1000 a couple years ago with the intention of doing a budget build in the cafe style.
However, once I got through the front end rebuild and carb rebuild, I started thinking it would be a better looking (read easier ) highway cruiser. This change of hart was also inspired by the ER build that showed up on pipeburn right around the time.
Anyways... here's some photos! The build is now complete to my satisfaction with a couple items still needing attention (neutral switch and low compression (may be a head job in my future)).
I feel I was successful in maintaining my budget build coming in at 3500 cad for the cost of the bike, parts, fluids, etc.
I also wanted to make this post to also say "thanks for the help". I didn't post a lot but I think I read the whole tech section and then some.
So... thanks. Thanks to the newby that posted exactly the same problem I had. Thanks to the experienced mechanics that took the time to answer the newby post (my posts too). And huge thanks to the gurus that put together the tech section.

Very nice indeed. I like the Honda Line bags. In my book bags are bags so if they look like luggage so what.

Re: 79 highway machine build
Thanks guys. I'll get some more photos next time I get out for a ride.
I actually kind of like the honda bags. They fit the vintage/look of the bike. They were pretty beat up and covered in dirt when I first got them. I glad I gave them a chance.

That's the stock 79 tail with chopped signals. I mounted these other ones that I picked up (believe they're off a CB) and painted it black.

Nice crash bars, where are they from. Where did you put the light switch for the lights?

They were on the bike when I picked it up. I do like them a lot. They had been tested out too:

Mounted the switch on the bars right under the choke. Found it on amazon bay for 20 or 30 bucks. Works alright and fits in with the rest of the bike.

Re: 79 highway machine build
Got to take some more photos today after test fitting the girl friend's back rest... mostly because I got a communicator set for my birthday and I can't just ignore her now
I also took the opportunity to fit some canvas bags I have for my triumph.
Canvas vs hondaline? Let me know what you think.

Re: 79 highway machine build
Good pictures, I am partial to the hard bags looks wise. The back rest is a must for a passenger. My buddy's' wife fell asleep and he goosed it to pass, her knees hit him in the pits, she was horizontal and ready to flip over, he hit the brakes, that got her back up.

Re: 79 highway machine build
Nice looking ride! I like the looks of the hard bags, overall, but form follows function... the canvas bags look easy to use and provide more flexibility.

Re: 79 highway machine build
Hondaline bags look best but I generally prefer to leave bags off if possible so maybe the canvas are more practical.
