And here is a shot of my driveshaft that broke, took a while to shake all the needles from the bearing caps out of the swingarm!

I would order Randakks rebuild kit and do your carbs..if that crap came out of the fuel bowl..it's probably throughout the carb..

Wheels turn freely, brakes need new lines, but no problems dragging. No visible leaks anywhere. I checked my mileage when I filled up yesterday: 26.2 mpg! Wish my Subaru got that kind of mileage... but my bike?!?!

Good call 5speed, I anticipated this and have been going back and forth about rebuilding myself or sending it out. I really want to do it, but the wife and kid will be sore at me. But to have it serviced by someone else I don't find cost effective. Decisions, decisions...

I'd been wondering when you would get serious with the internals of the carburetors. ;)

Regarding the carbs on a rebuild yourself vs sending them out it depends on your skill level and if you have done some past carb work yourself. Lots have done a first time rebuild and had good results and other have chased issues and fixes for some time after a first and second attempt.

If you feel confident in some skill level then the Randakk kit is a less expensive option, yet these carbs are quite complicated if you completely tear them down. There is an off idle jet fix on the 76 year that is slightly different than the other years in the size of the hole required in resizing the original jet.

IMO the advantage of sending them out is they are done right the first time and you can spend that extra time on other bike fix ups like the brakes, timing belts, gas tank clean out etc.

If you wish to stay with OEM style rubber brake lines then Sirus Consolidated out of Kitchener ON has a complete GL1000 kit with all front and rear lines for the bike at a very reasonable price and excellent quality. I used it on my 76 build and I am very happy with the results.
Current Bikes:

1966 CL77 - Honda 305cc - Dual purpose - "Gentleman's Scrambler" was a period moniker.
1967 CL175K0 - Low production number with #802 engine serial- winter 2019/2020 full restoration.
1972 CB350F - Baby Four with low mileage - Cosmetic refresh to the next level 2021/2022.
1978 CB550K - Very original bike with only 7499 Km. from new - light cleanup and refresh done.
1983 CB1100F - Canadian model - DOHC Supersport in pristine low kilometre condition from new.
1984 GL1200 - Standard model in showroom condition - two owner bike from new.
1984 CX650E - Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model - excellent one owner bike.

Last night I was able to drain the Seafoam 50/50 solution from the carbs (after 24 hour soak). Once the solution was drained from all carbs, I took it one step further and flushed them. I opened the fuel petcock and turned the engine over until fuel flowed from all four bowls. Some crud initially came out, but when I started flushing I continued until the crud stopped coming out. This took some time. Pics below show how much stuff came out. I also found the right screwdriver for this job. I was able to pull the plug wires to have unobstructed access to the drain plugs and selected a flathead bit with enough friction to keep the drain plug on the tip. No more fumbling, in all it took 15 minutes for this process. Once I finished I put more seafoam in the tank to continue to run the bike on. The results were fantastic! I took the bike out and it behaved much more civil. I can really feel the transition from idle to the high speed circuit now. The RPMs continue to hang but less frequent, and I can coax them down by letting the clutch out while in gear. I imagine running a few tanks worth of highly diluted seafoam "loosened" up the crud and the concentrated soak knocked it off. I'm going to repeat this process again (and again) until the carbs flow clear.

Before starting this project I'd read the various blogs on this topic and really took Randakks advice to heart, don't dive into the carbs until you are certain ignition and charging systems are in good shape. I've seen these threads where some guys get into them multiple times, and would really like to avoid that. So far flushing them out is yielding very positive results, I would like to see just how close I can get without tearing into them.

This year I rebuilt an Edelbrock on my chevy, sent my RV's Holley to Recarbco for a full rebuild and replating. I'm hoping to get by on this bike and enjoy the season!

Thank you for the recommendation, precisely why I signed up and quit "lurking". I found some cracking on my rear break line and possible seepage around the master. Would much rather spend my time on improving "rideability" and safety.

Very nice looking bike. I really like the 3 light setup. Did you buy it like that or set it up yourself? I'm curious how the running lights are attached?

Next time I take photos I will capture that. The lights came installed, will see if I can find any markings.
