"You know, the more I think about that lip on top of the transmission cover the less I like it. It makes the front of the engine look tidier but I have always thought it was just a place for dirt to collect. And if the rubber shrinks like this crap could be getting into the engine for years and you would never notice unless you took the cover off....."

I agree with that. The few I've had are caked full of stones and mud.

Sorry, you lost me. The neutral switch goes on the side of the engine and only has an o-ring to seal it. And if you have the wrong size the switch won't work right. The transmission cover does have a spot that traps crud but i don't see how it can get into the interior of the engine. Maybe a photo or drawing --or maybe as I often do, you are just grumbling?

The 1000 engine has the neutral switch on the side but the 1100 has it inside the transmission cover. Its part #6 in this drawing

Looking at the cover from above you can see that the rubber no longer fills the notch.

Ok. I am with you now. I guess I never paid any attention to the neutral switch on any of the 1100s I have worked on, including the one I am building at the moment.
Does look like a problem. Maybe some kind of rubber tape?

GL1100 '80 -82(? might have been '81) had the side switch. Later versions have the front one.

This is an '82 so that must have been the year they changed. I am thinking about finding a piece of rubber that will fill the gap plus maybe a mm extra and gluing it to the original.

I can't recall where I have acquired it but at one time or another I had some thick tape that was adhesive on one side. Would be good in your app but don't know what to suggest. OH!!!! as I type this now I recall that some of the adhesive tape intended for attaching trim molding is fairly thick and might be the ticket. Plus it is adhesive on both sides.

Yesterday I thought about the spark plugs & their gaps

The rod came today and I read the section of the FSM about rods & bearings and found an error in the FSM.

I also noticed that P.8-12 says "When replacing a connecting rod, be sure to use a new rod having the same weight code." Man, did I ever luck in - the replacement and the original are both 2D :-D

That also means that if the original bearing is good I can use it. I'm busy with my renovation projects for a couple of days but I'll try to fit learning about Plastigauge in :geek

The real problem this week (month?) is getting ahead of the household stuff. I am beginning to understand why some retired people say they can't figure out how they found time to go to work...

BTW: I cut a piece of cork gasket material to fill in the gap where the rubber shrunk and glued it in place with some of the Permatex Form-a-Gasket. It is about 1mm thicker than the gap and soft enough that it should squash nicely when I install the cover and seal it up again.
I notice that the "complete" gasket set doesn't include the gaskets that go between the rear panels of the timing belt housing (bolted to the heads) and the engine block (they are all missing something, aren't they?) so I will cut them from this same cork gasket material as I did on the old engine the last time I replaced a head gasket.

Update: A month has gone by and I haven't touched the engine except to move parts of it out of the way so a new window could be installed in the garage shop (short version of long story: We had 7 windows replaced; the other 16 were already good windows). A lot of furniture & junk that hadn't been touched in years had to be moved so the installers could get at them and during the process I decided to make some permanent changes that involve building & refinishing furniture. I also have to paint the rest of the windows & doors before their wooden frames begin to rot (I already had to repair one).

It is almost August now. I have a lot of home repairs &c that needs to be done while it is warm out. We are not planning to go anywhere that I need the GoldWing for. Since the 650 has only done about 3,000 Km since last fall it is in good shape and won't need any repairs that will take it off the road for more than a day or 2 at a time and if I have to I can get the 'Wing out of storage and drive it as it is.

I think I am going to leave the new engine on the back burner while I concentrate on all the other stuff.
