It should. There is a lot of space there for "extra" air that won't be compressed. ;)

Thanks everyone. I guess the next step will be to separate the cases and look at the rod. If I can't get a new one there are lots of used ones on eBay right now so I'm hoping I will still be able to use this engine.

What bugs me is that I had several options when I bought this engine. I chose the one that was closest and seemed like the best deal (came with most of a bike, lower mileage). Maybe it wasn't but then again who knows whether the others were any better. I guess I should be thankful for the rust in the cylinders that lead me to remove the heads in the first place.

Not long ago I bought a batch of GL parts from a storage unit. There were several boxes of assorted internal engine parts. I have never been inside the cases of a GL and I am not sure if there are multiple variations of rods but i will be glad to look at what I have and if I have something that matches, you can have it for shipping.
Bikes at present:

83 XL 600r with a 2004 XR650L engine
And a slightly worse for the wear BMW GS adventure bike awaiting repair

Went out to the storage shed and checked my inventory. I have two sets (8) of piston/rod combinations. Rods are marked S7 or S8 or S11. Most are S11. Based on other stuff in the box they probably came from GL1000 engines but maybe the rods are interchangeable(?). Anyway, let me know if you want one or more.

Thanks for the offer but I have a 1000 parts engine here. Unfortunately, at least according to the online fiche, the 1000 and 1100 rods are different.

A little work with a hammer and anvil and your good to go. Amazing the force needed to create a bend like that. also amazing it is tough enough to run after that. Good reminder to turn off the gas when stopped. I wonder what the bearing looks like from the force

Oh boy! That's a stark visual reminder for folks that don't/won't turn off the fuel tank valve when their engine is shut off.

Will you give us a side profile view of that bent connecting rod, and the adjacent not bent connecting rod, too?

From what I can tell the head gaskets were OK.

From what I can tell the bearing is in perfect shape.

I checked the side play and the other 3 are in spec while this one was just looser than spec. I have a feeling that indicates that it has been like this for a while.

Makes me want to pull my 1200 apart to see how bent it is. Okay, maybe not. What's your plan? Replace the rod and whatever new you can get?

If I can get a rod I don't see any reason I shouldn't still use this engine. Everything else looks good except the small amount of rust that led me to remove the heads and that isn't as deep as I thought.

I guess I'll have to learn about rod bearings now, won't I?
