!983 Project-Started with watching to many car shows

#1

Post by sippican »

Hi,
New guy here....
I was tired of watching reruns of Wheeler Dealer, Fast and Loud, Bitchen Rides, etc....you know all the Velocity shows where they restore cars.

Went out and bought a 1983 Gold Wing Interstate. Perfect running condition (before the strip down anyway).
I am in the middle of a restoration/transaction to a naked GoldWing

Sometimes seems like still at the start!
In the breakdown stages; Front forks off, Radiator off, Carbs off, all paintable stuff is off at the painter, etc.
Perfect project for a long cold snowy Winter.

Thanks all....I'm sure I will learn as I go. My touring ride is a 2011 Road Glide. This will be an 'around town' ride. The big surprise will be if it starts when I'm done!

It is reassuring to start with a running bike, but then there isn't as much suspense! And suspense is what keeps us up at night.
Bikes at present:

83 XL 600r with a 2004 XR650L engine
And a slightly worse for the wear BMW GS adventure bike awaiting repair
83 GL in process :IDTS:

The suspense for me is can I get it all back together again! Didn't take long to realize I needed to put parts/bolts, etc. in baggies and label them. also, tape wires and cables, writing what they are! Its all good though.

My orange bike, Draggon Wing was the first project I had ever tried and it was all in pieces an boxes when I bought it. I had no clue what most of the parts were. Eventually you will get to the point you recognize every nut bolt and screw, but baggies are still nice.

I agree. if you do it long enough, you just put it all in the same pile, and when you re assemble it, you know your done when the pile is gone

When I try that, I inevitably end up with one bolt, screw, or the like that should have been installed 10 steps before! lolol

Can't say that hasn't happened to me, but if yo do it long enough, and learn from those mistakes, it gets easier. I never have been one to cover my work bench, or floor, with plastic bags......but I DO understand those who do
