The next 1975 restoration

#1

Post by Irishman1 »

My 6th 1975 gl restoration is another blue green we picked up across the state in Spokane Washington. My first running resto and I planned on riding it home but the front brakes were locked up and so we came home without her and waiting until the previous owner could drop it off when they came over to our side of the state and delivered it to our island.
I started by removing the foot boards and heel-toe shifter and king/queen seat. This time Ive sent the carbs to pistol Pete to rebuild instead of doing it myself( im going to send all my other gl carbs to him as well, even the ones I've rebuilt).
Now to start stripping her down and building her up

Got a little more done on the resto last nite. Trying to get as much done before my next surgery on the 8th of march. Cleaning the engine for paint and cleaned and painted the headers. Found the fuel leak on the #4 carb. It was the new gasket. Starting to rip out the dyna and wiring at the battery. Will re-wire the starter solenoid back to stock. Primed and painted the period correct marzocchi strada shocks too.

Got some more OEM parts for the blue 75 in the mail Saturday. Shelter hinge pins, washers and clips. A couple more sets of side panel screw pins, springs and pins for the OEM NOS 75 blue side panel and a set for the NOS 76 sulfur side panel, the next resto. I also got the shelter sides clear coated ( took longer because of the cold weather).

Heal up a bit first. Avoid infection at all costs. Then: You need a bike lift or chain hoist. I have both. The hoist is nice, but with my 7 foot garage ceiling it's tough to hook up and get the chain where it doesn't hit the bike. If you've seen Pedrotq's builds, he has lifting slings and tosses the bike up and down with ease. I have a plywood platform 24"by 30" that I slip under mine. You can sit on a chair and get to most things.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Back to work after recovery! Got the carbs rebuilt, leak tested, taken apart and put back together, leak tested, checked float height. Leak tested. Taken apart and finally replaced the carb to plenum seals! I thought I had used a new set of Randakk's seals but I re used old ones in a new bag!!! Finally got it!
