Re: Meet Valerie; 1976 GL1000 Custom Transformation
Thanks for showing up with help!robin1731 wrote:Have you pulled and cleaned all the grounds?
Yes, I've pulled the main battery ground (8-10AWG wire from battery negative [-] to triangular rear motor mount)
I know there's the second green wire up to above the coils from near the harness... and the ground inside the headlight bucket.
I've cleaned the one inside the headlight bucket as well... and wrapped up any breaks in the wires with nice electrical tape... but, I've not pulled the one near the coils yet. That'll be tonight.

Check the resistance on the ground wires and the positive cable wire to the battery also.

Re: Meet Valerie; 1976 GL1000 Custom Transformation
Unsure, but would cracked coils display this malfunction? My bike had a severed wire to one coil, & the other coil was cracked, so I replaced both.
If there is one thing I have learned throughout this process it is this: Check your respirator for spiders before you put it on.

Welcome Back, P. Thanks for continuing down the rabbit hole with me as I get Val sorted.Patriccio wrote:Unsure, but would cracked coils display this malfunction? My bike had a severed wire to one coil, & the other coil was cracked, so I replaced both.

It seems like, according to Randakk, coil loss would be particular to loss of 1/3 or 2/4 cylinder ignition and create rough running symptoms.
Further, it would seem that such a component, according to my limited interpretation of the wiring diagram , doesn't get direct current until sent by the starter button being pressed, no?

Thanks again, and will do!robin1731 wrote:Check the resistance on the ground wires and the positive cable wire to the battery also.
I'm assuming use my DMM, and then an FSM to see the resistance values of the individual lines?
(Never checked resistance before... but doesn't seem too hard)
Also;
According to my diagram, I'm seeing ONLY the big black 8-10AWG wire to engine-mount and the green wire between the coils as the grounds on the bike, right?

Re: Meet Valerie; 1976 GL1000 Custom Transformation
There also might be one in the headlight bucket. As far as the resistance check, there should be little to none. You are basically checking the condition of the wires and connectors themselves. High resistance equals high heat, corrosion, etc...

Re: Meet Valerie; 1976 GL1000 Custom Transformation
Still no luck...
More than 1/2 the problem is that I don't know what I'm doing with the electrical, and that makes me unable to tell if I've really used he DMM correctly to assess resistance.
However;
Pulled the 8-10AWG wires from the solenoid off (both the power to the starter cable and the main fuse) and both tested at 0.00 ohms at all DMM levels.
Currently sitting infront of it,
But unsure how to test resistance on the green ground to the coils because the other side is wrapped up in the harness.
Should I just pull any ol' green wire and put the + or - lead onto that and the other green wire grounds? I know they're all connected inside the harness... so I'm unsure as to test that cable in particular

Re: Meet Valerie; 1976 GL1000 Custom Transformation
You checked main fuse? If so, try and see if your main connection plug at the bottom of the ignition switch is connected fully. It may be loose and it is a right angle connector which is just pressed on I think. You might have to unhook the headlight and move it forward a little to access it. If not remove the connection plug and make a set of jumper wires to connect the input line( red wire) to the black wire. See if it starts. If it does, it's your ignition switch or the wiring to it.
Here's what I carry in my wallet. If I ever lose my key, I will still get home with this. I forget which other one I hook up for lights. To me, your symptoms are indicative of some electrical weakness somewhere. The ignition switch can fail intermittently like this.

Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Excellent point. It could certainly be that! I'll try the jumper tonight and report.ericheath wrote:You checked main fuse? If so, try and see if your main connection plug at the bottom of the ignition switch is connected fully.
100% agree. The ignition switch seems like the next likely cause... I did pull the 5-pin connector to the the ignition switch when the battery voltage was being parasitically drawn with the key ON, and saw an immediate rise to 12+v's... I'll jumper the little thing tonight.ericheath wrote: To me, your symptoms are indicative of some electrical weakness somewhere. The ignition switch can fail intermittently like this.

Re: Meet Valerie; 1976 GL1000 Custom Transformation
Alright... so I bypassed the Ignition Switch (black to red on 90' connection) and bypassed the Killswitch... (black/white to black/brown) and again... *click* from starter button.
And then voltage drops to 2.5v or lower, and then slowly builds randomly to 5-7v... then if I disconnect the jumper on the ignition it springs back up to 12.3v or so...
No luck.
So, what's next steps here?
I believe we've ruled out kill and ignition switches... my estimation;
it's got to be something else 'down the line' that consistently gives enough resistance to "pause" the rising voltage through the line! Possibly a regulator/rectifier?

Re: Meet Valerie; 1976 GL1000 Custom Transformation
Bypassed RLU. Still nothing.
Still massive draw.
Note; if I disconnect the killswitch bypass, voltage stays at 12.3v with the headlight/dash lights on.
The minute I connect the killswitch bypass, voltage begins to drop. Sometimes slowly (11-> 10-> then big drop to 2v) other times, immediately
