Making good progress. But, the devil is in the details as they say...
Isn't that the truth! I've gotten pretty good at breaking them down; parts just seem to fall right off! lolol

The to-do list:

Engine:
Clean up the engine.
Check and quick-clean the starter.
Pull and rebuild the water pump.
Flush the crankcase while the trans cover is off.
Check the neutral switch.
Replace the timing belts.
Replace the shift shaft seal while it's easily accessed.
Replace the coolant tube o-rings and elbow gaskets.
Set the valve lash.
Install the new Dyna ignition.
Rebuild the carbs.
(Maybe) rebuild the tensioners.
(Maybe) replace the valve cover gaskets and grommets.

The rest:
De-rust the gas tank.
Refurbish the better of the two wiring harnesses.
Rebuild the forks.
Replace the wheel bearings.
Replace the steering head bearings.
Rebuild all the brake components.
Replace the brake lines.
Drill the rotors.
Mount new tires.

Up in the air:
Turn signals.
Fenders.
Body work.

Just a few things to do yet, lol!

I had a bad used water pump on the shelf, so I pulled out down and knocked it apart to get an idea what's involved. Pretty simple, really. Also popped off the belt tensioners. One spins nearly silently, the other has a little whir, but both feel smooth and tight, so I'm going to cross that off the list. Started wiping down the engine too. Some staining and lifted paint on the top from past fuel leaks, and light oily grime below the heads and aft, which looks kind of typical from messy valve adjustments and hard to clean areas.
Now it's time to make my first 'real money' shopping list of the engine related parts I'll need to get it ready to install in the Jalopy's frame!

Seeing as the 'Layla' project and the little CB650 are in hibernation, and this project is taking up space in my basement, it's time to start getting back at this one. Somehow I've misplaced the water pump I tore down (I swear I put it somewhere easy to find, lol), but I do have another to rebuild and the kit and gasket set to do that job. The '77 I just parted out also has a starter, but of unknown condition, so I'll have to give that a look-see as well.
The frame still needs some cleanup and surface rust treatment before paint. I'm not sure if I mentioned it elsewhere in this thread, but I intend to use a brush on 'implement' primer and paint. We'll see how that goes!

Some shots of the frame showing the fairly extensive surface rust. I had originally planned on just cleaning up the offending areas and using a rust treatment product but the rust is more extensive than I thought. At that point I opted to use a chemical stripper (safe for use indoors) that I had on hand rather than shell out cash to get the frame blasted. I won't do that again!

I got sick and tired of trying to 'eat the frog' cleaning up the frame, so I moved on to what I thought would be a couple of easy tasks: rebuilding the water pump and cleaning up and lubing the starter. The water pump is finished and came out ok, but it took much longer than I had hoped. I guess I don't have a big enough hammer, lol. The starter is mostly disassembled, except for the gear drive end, which I haven't quite figured out yet.
I had to stop at that point in order to watch the Packers hold on to beat the Seahawks.

IIRC, this engine has just north of 30k miles on it, and has been sitting in a controlled environment for many years. Oil and coolant looked good when drained, so with the water pump replacement and the typical belts, plugs, thermostat, etc., I'm confident it'll be a runner from the get-go.
In the last pic you can kind of see the oil sludge build-up from sitting so long. While I have the transmission cover off, I always like to pop off the pick-up screen cover and spray out the sump area with brake cleaner. It's messy and smelly, but really prevents any of the gunk from circulating through the engine later. I also generally do an oil change after a few easy miles once it's on the road...

Also hacked up the tensioner pulleys in preparation for the arrival of the new pulleys and hardware to replace them. The pulleys seemed to be fine, but I'll most likely be doing the pulleys on 'Grumpy' so I figured might as well practice.

I know I've been just plinking along on this project, squeezing in a half hour here, an hour there. Some days I just want to pack it up and dump it on the side of the road. Looking over the engine has given me a bit more gumption, which I hope will carry over when I get back to working on the frame.

I don't think the frame is as bad as you think. That is surface rust, and it appears quite sound. I don't see any holes anywhere.
Even if there were holes it would not be so big a job to fix them.

I like your close up pictures. What kind of camera do you use?

Thanks for the encouragement, Liam. The frame is in really good shape overall. It's just been a PITA to clean up and prep for paint. As with nearly everything on this build, I have to fight the urge to make it 'beautiful,' both because it's not the goal, and it's not in the budget. lolol lolol lolol
As far as the photos go, I just use my phone, but I do adjust for lighting, focus, etc.

Finished installing the rebuilt water pump and transmission cover Sunday, as well as the oil pick up screen, cover, and neutral switch. From there I moved on to the coolant crossover tubes and elbows, which will get new o-rings and gaskets. I also picked up the rest of the hardware to rebuild the belt tensioners, and the pulleys themselves arrived in the mail yesterday. Unless some other 'must do' project pops up, by the end of this coming weekend I should have the engine itself all buttoned up!

The engine's almost ready to go. New belts, rebuilt tensioners, valve clearances set, etc. I need to go through my parts stash and see if I need to order the tach drive seal and shifter seal. Everything else should be good.
Time to give my workspace some attention, then back to the frame...
