My 79 project. SEAT IS DONE
Yes Doc, I bought a 79, your favorite style.
I'm not good at build threads so this is already pretty far along.
It has 48,600 some odd miles on it. Had 1100 carbs on it but came with the original carbs. I've already rebuilt those and installed them. has Dyna ignition with accel coils. Jardine headers but someone cut the tips off.
I rebuilt the front brake system and installed braided brake lines. Had to put a new starter solenoid on it. P.O. had a toggle switch installed in place of that. After installing the new solenoid the starter would run as soon as you turned the key on and stay running when bike started. So I replaced the diode in that system. Also put a combo reg/rectifier on it.
Paint was, lets say, not great. Bad enough that I bought different faux tank sides instead of redoing the originals. I also picked up a king/queen seat that I will recut and have covered. Bike had no front or rear fender along with some other parts. I've been scrounging what I can from members here and on ebay.
It has chrome valve covers that have seen better days. (those that know me know I'm not a chrome guy )Along with the belt covers. I have covers to replace all of those that will go to the powder coaters next week.
Needs a few other little things but it will be ready in plenty of time for spring.
And yes, it will be for sale then. Probably with new tires then too.
Here are a few before and during pics. Body panels are there just to see how they look. Painted the faux tank covers yesterday so it needs to cure for awhile.

The side covers were so bad I had to put new gelcoat on them. This is just one.

Re: My 79 project.
No Tim, sorry. Then it would look like any other stock 79. There is another very subtle custom touch on the rear. Nearly impossible to see. Maybe if it was parked next to another GL1000.

Re: My 79 project.
Spent a couple of hours today cleaning up the mufflers. If you look in the earlier pics you'll see they were pretty rough. The PO did not have a garage so this spent all it's life outside while he had it. They still aren't perfect but for what I had to start with they came out ok.

Re: My 79 project.
Also spent some time on the seat today. Removed the old cover. Removed the foam from the pan. Then bead blasted the pan. Those of you that have never taken the foam off an original seat might be surprised. The pan is usually pretty rusty under the foam. You can see after I painted it there is still evidence of the heavy rust. You'll also see some foam still attached. Hard to get it all of clean. And I like to leave what is left to help keep it smooth. Putting in all new foam is best but it's easier to start with some that is already formed to the pan. This was an aftermarket seat using the stock pan. Pic of the foam is just to see what I'm starting with. My wife does all my seats and will probably not start on this until late winter or spring some time.

Re: My 79 project.
It is rattle can. It is a factory Chrysler color from dupli-color. Don't recall the name or number without going out to look at the can. After a couple of months I will wet sand and polish it. It will be a 10' paint job.
And yes, 78 and 79 are very similar. Turn signals are different, round on 78, square/rectangle on 79. Mine will be aftermarket along with the tail light. This isn't a restore, just get it decent and ready to ride.
