Here are a few more bling pictures. Here's a shot of the new right shock installed:

Image

Right side muffler bracket that I made out of local hardware store bar stock. A couple bends in the vice, a couple of holes drilled, and after powder coating, nearly invisible back there.

Image

After valve adjustment, I finally installed the valve covers that I PC'd at least a couple of years ago.

Image

Hopefully I'll have the couple remaining electrical issues sorted by the weekend so I can take it out for a little ride around the block.

I took care of almost all of the remaining items on my punch list for completion this weekend. That included running it off of the aux. fuel tank, then on the actual fuel tank, installation of horns, bolting down the shelter cover and trim, mirror installation, etc. It seems to start and idle nicely now, so I took it for a quick ride up and down my street. It's got plenty of power and felt great. The upgraded front brakes felt really good too - way better than the single piston calipers that were on my '77. I have to do a little more debugging to see if I have a clogged reserve pickup screen. It runs fine in the normal position but was acting like it was running out of gas in the RES position. Anyway, here are a couple new pics:

I have a couple of subtle, but cool custom features that are almost done, along with the chrome trim pieces for the headers. Later this week I'll take a couple more pics to show them. In the meantime, I plan to register the bike this week so I can get a month of riding in before the season ends.

While I was in the planning stage and decided to use lower CB1100F bars, I wondered if there was a good way to hide the center portion of the bars. Just for kicks I dug out a spare 1100F handlebar clamp/fuse holder, and it turned out to be a perfect fit. The 4 mounting holes lined up perfectly with the original GL clamp holes. I just had to make some minor modifications with my grinding wheel so that it would fit and not interfere with the upper triple, then I PC'd it.

Image

A very similar clamp is used on the 750F, 900F, 900C, etc. Many of them came with a plastic fuse cover with raised HONDA letters on it. I had one that I was planning to use, but for the heck of it, I asked my CNC machinist friend what he could come up with. This guy is a genius and as usual, he came through for me.

Image

And going with the gold theme of the bike, I had to do the right thing.

Image

A little more detail work and a few finishing touches is all that it needs now to be called complete.

Thanks! They did just the trick to make the bike really pop.

Now if I can get the bike to run as well as it looks, I'll really be happy. But right now it isn't making good power and stumbles under load. I'm suspicious of timing, so I decided to pull the belt covers and make sure that the timing pulleys were aligned. Sure enough, they were fine from when I replaced the belts 3 years ago. I'm going to put new ones in while it's opened up. One oddity - I noticed that two bolts are missing here:

Image

The brackets seem to be solidly in place, but shouldn't there be bolts in those two threaded holes?

Next to check is points gaps and timing. I'm suspicious of the timing. The engine fires up almost instantly even after sitting for days, so I don't think there is a carb issue. They were properly overhauled by Mike Nixon and I sync'd them after installation.

The Harley mufflers had steel plugs pressed into the center pipe. The newer exhausts come that way and are quite restrictive. A local Harley mechanic that I know suggested that I knock out the plugs. I did, but it didn't help with the stumbling issue. I may run the bike with them completely off to see if that makes a difference.

Compression readings were in the 145psi range, which is on the low side. That doesn't make sense since the motor is fairly low mileage with just over 15K on the clock. Mike Nixon suggested opening up the valve clearances to .006, which I will do shortly as well.

If the symptoms I described sound familiar, feel free to chime in with any suggestions or possible causes.
