Re: Found this nice '78 and now the resurrection begins...
I'm sad to say that riding season is officially over here in Worcester Massachusetts. We got 8" of snow Friday morning and even though most of it has already melted, the roads have salt on them now. This bike is winterized and in the back shop up on the lift for some winter tweaking.
I ended up installing a Dyna S electronic ignition to address the stumbling issues. The bike is running much better, but there's still some minor stumbling when I really twist the throttle. I'll re-check the timing and adjust if necessary. Not sure what else to check if that doesn't do the trick. Carbs were overhauled by Mike Nixon and are well sync'd now. Could the Harley mufflers be creating a little too much back pressure? I'm curious to know if anyone who has used similar carbs had to make any adjustments to compensate for them. As always, suggestions are welcome.

You only got to ride it a bit. To bad. Always the way. I don’t know about the back pressure.
I do know that it will run better nd better the more you ride it. Next year. What a collection you have. Wow.

This one did turn out very nicely. Enjoyed watching and have to say that BOTM is well-deserved.

Re: Found this nice '78 and now the resurrection begins...
I'm doing a bunch of powder coating for a friend who's restoring his 78 GL and today he offered me these engine guards as a trade toward some work:
They're in nice shape and aren't too bulky. They might be a nice little addition to my bike.
What's a reasonable offer for something like these?

Yep. My favorite bars for the 1000. Hondaline - functional, yet understated. I do very much dislike the huge, looping, garish style bars. Be sure not to over-tighten the clamps and spoil the frame.

...and a bit of a tease with the 1100 project in the background!

I love the way your pipes came out. Scanning your thread, I may have missed an answer to my question: are those pipes Harley also or is just the muffler Harley? If the pipes are original, how'd you get them so perfect? Mine are de-rusted now, but they're far from pretty, so I was thinking of wrapping them. Great job on a classy ride.

The mufflers came off a Harley, but the header pipes are original. I media blasted them and powder coated them with silver high temp powder. We'll see how they look after a couple thousand miles of riding - still too early to tell.GW Hobo wrote:I love the way your pipes came out. I installed the engine guards a couple nights ago and I'm very happy with them. They're fairly subtle and look right. And I worked out a nice trade with my friend who had them, so everyone wins.

They do look nice, but I don't quite understand how they attach on the bottom.

I'll try to remember to post a picture later today, but it's quite simple. They attach to the ends of the long bolt that goes through the bottom front engine mounts and frame.Sugs wrote:They do look nice, but I don't quite understand how they attach on the bottom.

Great engine guards! Placerville had those on his ‘76.
