He came down a LOT. I would ask permission to bring a battery and do a comp test and if she cranks good and the numbers are not terrible I would give him the 12. If not then you have something to negotiate with

I picked up a Kawasaki for half price one time because it had low compression. New rings and a rebuilt head and it ran like new. For me that was very little money and not much time. ;)

I stuck to my guns and stayed at $1100 - he accepted. I have a very busy week ahead of me, so I may not have it in hand until Sunday morning.

Excellent suggestion and it will only take a few minutes to do, so I plan on it. If anything looks out of sorts, I can always back out.

The next pics I post will be of the bike in my trailer and back here at home. ;)

I will be picking up the bike at lunchtime tomorrow if all goes as planned. The owner still has to dig out or find the title and I really hope he has it by the time I get there. If he doesn't, the price is going to drop dramatically as I will have to tear it all apart and transfer all the parts over to the titled '78 frame that's sitting in my shop.

I always wonder why sellers wait until the last minute to find such a critical document.

They always 'know where it is' until they find out it isn't! I have to say that I made the mistake of allowing my partner to keep track of this kind of paperwork for a while, until I sold an old work van and ended up nearly tearing apart her filing cabinet looking for the title. Now I keep track of mine, and she keeps track of hers (I wish the money thing worked that way too, lol! ).

My buddy Ron and I went over to the seller's house at lunchtime and was happy to see that he found the title. That checked out with the VIN, so one less major detail to worry about. I put a fresh battery in and the engine spun nicely. Compression testing showed between 140-150 PSI per cylinder with the throttle wide open. I would expect that to improve after the motor has been run and checked cold again later. So we loaded up the bike and went on our way. It's in my trailer out in the parking lot here at work for now.

This guy was right out of "American Pickers." He had all sorts of stuff in the front garage, including several vintage Harleys and choppers. Out back in a giant garage he had a Challenger with 446 6-pack, an old Packard, a GTO, some sort of blown Blazer pickup, and a Duesenburg up on a lift. And that was only a small fraction of what he has there. I wouldn't know where to begin if I was a picker and even if I was, he didn't seem eager to part with anything. He's in the demolision business and comes across all sorts of things, so now he has my card and will contact me if he finds any bikes that are worth grabbing.

So I'm happy and now that I have two burgandy '78's, I have plenty of spare parts to turn this into a really nice one. I'll post a couple pics when I get home tonight.

Here it is at it's new home just before being brought into the shop:

And here it is with it's brethren:

The guy I bought it from claims that the carb bowls were drained and the bike was run dry before it was stored. By the way this turns over, I swear it wants to start. It's very tempting to hook up the aux. fuel tank and see if it will, but I think I should at least replace the belts before I try.
