Re: 1976 GL1000 - Candy Red - Dover, NH
Went out to start it after letting it sit cold for about 1.5 hours (parked it around 6:15pm EST) and it started and idled just fine using the "Randakk" warm starting method, just as it had before the exhausts took on the sound of a .45-70 when I got eager with the throttle.
Weird.
Here are the plugs I pulled from the bike a few days ago.

More fun today.... took a look around the bike after filling it up (25 MPG'S, again) and found that the drain bolt on the tank is seeping. Going to drain it anyway for the carbs, so will get around to pulling that plug, getting a new washer, and using some sealant to prevent it from leaking again. At least now I know where some of that gassy smell is coming from.

Some of it would have been the leaking gas from the drain plug too. Depending how bad the leak was.RAT wrote:Pretty bad mileage .... plugs don't look really rich tho' ??

The carbs are off! Wasn't too bad pulling them after the cables were undone.

The rebuild was indeed good fun. Used the Randakk's kit and took my time with plenty of brake cleaner and air. Got everything bolted back up yesterday (who knew the throttle cables would be such a PITA to get back on?) and there's a noticeable improvement in sound/behavior i.e no more backfiring. However, I hooked up my carb sync tool and appear to have a problem...
Too. much. air. When I blip the throttle, there's noticeable hesitation before a quick surge. At normal operating temperature after giving agood handful of throttle, the idle "hangs" at 2500-3000 rpm per the tach and takes it's time coming back down.
The rubber on the intake manifolds looked pretty shot when I had them off and (according to the sync tool) its an issue with all 4.
(Order of carbs in the picture L-R go 2, 4, 3, 1)

Edit: Near-impossible to start it back up after letting it sit for 1-3 hours. Starter turns the motor over, but giving it throttle makes it die.

- This is just after hooking to sync tool up and without making any adjustments to the sync screws.

Welp, managed to massively screw this one up! Broke the head off of the bolt that holds the points/ignition advance under the points cover. Looking for a good GL1000 mechanic in New England to work on this and finish the timing/tune up.

That sucks! It would be a bit of work, but you could remove the cam and take it to a good machine shop to have it removed. Or find a replacement cam, which would cost about the same and be a little less predictable... My 2 cents.

Hello, I'm curious if you found the issue with your horn, turn signals, and break light? My 75 has the same issue. Thanks.
