Re: "Bad Idea" low budget build
UPDATE:
Bad Idea has been running surprisingly well, considering it's not been running right. I have been riding it most of the season, thinking to myself, "this doesn't feel right," even though I've never had anything to compare it to since I'd never ridden a Goldwing before. After quite a bit of troubleshooting and one trip to the dyno, the problem has been positively identified as a semi-faulty Dyna-S plate. I am in the process of getting that resolved and will report back.
In other news, I was finally able to clean out the garage and sell off (trade, actually) the frames and all my extra parts. I had tried to sell them at a swap meet and had no luck, but since they were all already loaded on my trailer, I listed the whole pile on CL. I found a buyer who traded me a rifle and shotgun for the whole load. I'm happy, he's happy. I think it was a good trade. However, I'm not certain how to account for the value on my tally here. Maybe just take off the approximate value of the firearms from my total?
Total so far: $2755.90
One Dyno run: $50
Replacement Dyna plate + shipping:$110
firearm trade: -$450
Grand total: $2465.90

Re: "Bad Idea" low budget build
If I were doing the tally for myself, I would probably value the guns at about $2000!
But then maybe I wouldn't have dared run the tally in the first place!

Seriously, though it is a great bike at a very reasonable price. I have said before and believe, that it is less expensive to start with the nicest bike you can afford and then modify to your preference and budget than to do as I usually do, which is start with a junker or box of parts and build a bike. I haven't run a total on the Dumpster project, though I did keep reasonably accurate records, but from previous experience it will be around $5000. But my goal is to "build a bike" not build myself a bike to ride. It is unlikely I will get my money back or even most of it, but you on the other hand, should be able to at some point, get a big portion of your investment back plus have the fun of one or more seasons of riding.
