Dad's Bike...a new build...
Big thanks to robertoman69... I picked up everything he had that resembled a '77...
Plenty of quality parts, Im hoping to build this for my dad. The engine will need some attention since it was stored outside without valve covers for 2ish years, but it moves freely and the bike appears to be mostly complete. So far all I can tell that is missing are the shelter plastics, left side timing cover and maybe just some misc stuff...
This wont be a crazy custom build like the turbo bike, more of a restomod...a reliable, almost daily driver.
Short term to do list: send carbs out, front engine renewal, water pump, heads, timing belts, C5 ignition. Should keep me busy for a bit...my goal is to finish by the middle of september.
First pics of many, and if you followed my turbo build (linked in my sig) you know I like to post pictures!

Re: Dad's Bike...a new build...
Lucky dad!! Be interesting to see how it turns out.
Previous Rides,
1980 CB250N Good to learn on
1981 CX500 good mid range tourer, went to Austria on it!
1983 GL1100C Pride and joy, sold when I bought my 1st house, big mistake
1985 GL650 Silverwing another mistake, horrible bike
1986 CBX550 Good commuter
1989 Suzuki GS750 (1976) cheap and cheerful until a dog ran out in front of me on Xmas Eve, 1991
Current bikes
2010 CB1300 back on a bike after 19 years, two divorces, children grown up etc
1980 GL1100 NOW ON THE ROAD, still use CB1300.

Re: Dad's Bike...a new build...
Pulled the trans cover and heads. Pleasantly suprised, i expected to find all kinds of nasty stuff in there.
Shot an email to PistolPete about doing the carbs. Ordered a bunch of parts for the heads, a full engine gasket kit, spin on adapter from randakk, water pump, and a stainless socket bolt set...its amazing what you learn from one build to the next. Going to hopefully eliminate the need to pull the engine once its in the frame.
This will be my first time doing any kind of head work. Plan to clean up/replace some of the rusty parts, lap the valves, replace the valve and cam seals.
Once the front of the engine and heads are done, ill pull the rear cover and replace the stator and probably do the starter clutch just in case. I want to make sure i do it all right since its going to my dad in FL and i wont be around to tinker with it.

Re: Dad's Bike...a new build...
Started work on the heads and front cover while waiting for parts to arrive...
When i pulled the water pump I noticed a nice "nick" on the housing...if i just file it down so its not rough you think i'll be ok? Or is the cover trash? Seems like it would be a good place for a leak. Id say its about a millimeter deep.
Pic of the progress on the heads so far just for build documentation, nothing new for most of you...

Re: Dad's Bike...a new build...
Got the heads cleaned up, valves lapped, and new valve seals. Evapo rust is my new best friend!
Got the right side cleaned up, looks pretty good. Left side i couldnt finish because i ran out of carb cleaner tonight.
Also cleaned up the front cover, have a new water pump to go in. Rear cover is done, just need to pick up some new bolts to replace the phillips head ones that hold the stator in place. Clutch springs/discs and new electrosport stator came today. Hoping to have the engine cleaned, painted, and in frame within the next two weeks. Carbs have been sent out to pistol pete.

Re: Dad's Bike...a new build...
I'll have some pics tomorrow, but right now I'm putting the timing belts put back on. I'm familiar with the standard belt change, but what is the best way to do it after refitting the heads from cleaning/lapping?
I've seen the info posted here and there, but can't seem to find it...

Re: Dad's Bike...a new build...
Do it the same way. When I do the heads I always put the heads back on without the cams. Then I put the cam pulleys on loosely and put the cams in with the timing marks all at least close to where they should be. I should add I back off all of the rocker arm adjusters also. Once the cam holders are torqued down remove the pulleys. Then put the covers on the front of the heads that go behind the pulleys. Then bolt the pulleys on. Then get the marks real close and put the belts on. At this point it is just like changing the belts.
I will add too. Before I put the heads on I make sure the crank is in position. With numbers 1 and 2 pistons at top dead center. Some do it with the pistons partially down the hole. For me I like to have the pistons close to where they need to be. If you do everything else like I said and use caution you don't have to worry about the valves hitting pistons.

Re: Dad's Bike...a new build...
Make sure your plugs are out and your valve adjusters are ALL THE WAY BACKED OFF . then You can line up your #T1 in the hole and your pullys with the UP mark and the side marks lined up.What I do then is loosely adjust # 1 cylinder valves . If the engine doesn't want to turn over by hand a full rotation I loosen #1 all the way off again and turn it by hand till #1 lines up in the hole and UP on the belt pullys and do #1 again. Basically turning it over by hand till the valves don't bind. if you done it a few times you can look at the cam lobes on #1 cylinder and get a better idea of what im saying . I like to use a nissen metal marker for the side marks and UP marks . Makes it EZ to see. Its always a good idea to have oil in the engine . I prefer to turn it over with the crank pully bolt. I hope You checked the stator bolt for torque when you had the rear cover off. That's the way I do it .JB
jbz........... Thinkin about sh-t too hard and You wont get anything done
