After my stress-reducing Monday morning bicycle ride, I attended to the Puppy. Trickle charger was on the battery all night, & still no start. I wheeled it out to the street, & parked my truck next to it & gave it a jump w/ the cables. No start. Just a little sound. You know when you get brave enough to back a kitten into a corner & then you try to poke it a little bit w/ a cotton swab & it growls, yea, that's the growl I got. Then it quit. Typically, when you jump a vehicle w/ a poorly performing battery, it will start. I let the truck idle for a bit w/ the batteries connected, similar to that connection between a calloused palm & a bottle of scotch. Still nothing. I didn't have time to just run a cable to the starter terminal.
After the disconnection, I backed my truck away & spotted a small puddle of warm oil on the asphalt. "What in tar nation is that?" I yelled to no one in particular.

I crawled under the truck & poked around, just like a responsible truck owner should do. That truck is only 17 years old, & what is going on w/ my vehicles? The oil filter was loose. Now, a conspiracy theorist might think that someone tried to sabotage my truck, but I just figure that lady that I thought might be yelling at me while I blasted through the complex w/ no mufflers on the bike just hired a midget to dress in black & sneak under my truck at night & loosen the oil filter.

I guess the starter motor may be bad. I'll have to yank it out & bench test it. I guess I now have to build a bench to test it on; there aren't any of those on my patio.

I did bump-start it again today so I could go & gas it up. It runs fine,& if I don't get on it too much, the back fires are minimized.
If there is one thing I have learned throughout this process it is this: Check your respirator for spiders before you put it on.

POW!

My Puppy fired right up w/ a single delicate push of the starter button. He has the authority of a lion & a volcano (especially without the mufflers). He fired up exactly like he had been designed & manufactured by a wonderful collection of Japanese engineers & all the associates, sub-contractors & caterers, especially those delivering safe-net caught sushi.

The old starter has that phillips head screw right smack in the middle of the casing. And the lead is shorter.

New starter has no phillips head screw, & the lead is placed farther forward on the motor.

Here is the actual unopened box trying on a disguise that simply did not work. I found him within minutes.

Finally, the starter is in. I think I'll ride it to work tonight & hope I don't get a ticket for unlawful display of lion roar & volcano breath on a Wednesday, west of the Mississippi.

And for those gentleman who know what a box wrench, a spanner, and an angle grinder are, I have some information regarding parts.
I bought the first starter from Rare Electrical & rec'd it 11/10/15, installed 11/11/15. It was $74.78
I bought the new starter from Nations Starter & Alternator & installed it May 30/2018. It was $136.95 (delivery $15.95).

that philips head screw in the side of the case is the plug for the hole you top up the starter fluid with.

So now I can't top off the starter w/ starter fluid? Should I use scotch?

Cheap bourbon, too tasteful.. How about some ether?; I'd use it just like I was firing up an ancient diesel engine!

Let's see if the pics rotate first before I have to burn calories thinking up captions.

Yep, good. I did the manly grinding thing w/ the masculine blue angle grinder w/ two different cut-off wheels, one metal, the other black w/ bumpies. Headers aren't exactly the same length, mainly because they aren't square & it's difficult to measure from one certain place on each header. I'm workin' it out.
I know a girl who has a guy who lives quite near my son's girlfriend (He's her brother.) who can weld better than me. Next step is to make an appointment w/ him & have him weld the cans onto the tubes. Hey, good name for a biker bar: The Cans & Tubes Bar & Grill
Hopefully, he's an expert on welding new stainless onto oldish steel headers.
As Buzz LIghtyear might say, "To Serendipity & Beyond!"

There's a beautiful 16-year-old right there in a wonderful black box. It winked at me in the store, so I had to buy it. Sun's out. I did the non-rain dance & drove down to one of those gigantic box stores, a warehouse, really. It's huge, & it was probably started by one guy back in the sixties working from his garage right next to the washer & dryer. He had a dose of entrepreneurship & a dribble of greed in his blood, a simple phrase (buy low, sell higher),& now the stores are intergalactic.

I cruised down to the warehouse in my beat-up-old truck, & I had Petula Clark blasting through the cab, so that makes me groovy. Next up: Big Mama Thorton. Next up: Sam Cook. Next up: Muddy Waters. I was in the groove all the way to the store & back.

After loading up the shopping cart, you have to check out w/ all the other skilled shoppers. My cashier was swift & pleasant, but we almost butted heads when she kept putting items back into the shopping cart post-scanning & not into the boxes I had provided. She would place an item in the cart, & I would remove it & put it into a box. She stopped & peered out from her beautiful asian eyes, eyes surrounded by smooth wonderful oriental skin. Our eyes locked, her fingers stopped keying in item numbers, time stopped, a lull in the time-space continuum, a distention of my perception of time-space. We hovered together in a purgatorious nano-second . . .

"I have a pick-up truck," I said.
"I should have known that," she said.
"How would you have known that?"
"Thank you."
Time-space started up again.

The headers & new mufflers are in the hands of a highly skilled craftsman getting welded. When I get the message regarding their completion, I'll move on to the next task: painting them.
