Yes. There is oil in the engine. I was hoping not to have to pull the engine. Anyone else have a guess or suggestion?

My guess is a worn primary chain. And it is only a guess. How many miles on the Bike?

There are less than 10k miles on the bike, but I was also wondering if it was a chain. How big of a bear is that to replace?

You have to split the cases. So a big deal. It cold be the starter clutch is hung up and the starter chain is continuing to turn while the engine is running. Not very likely . But it does sound like a slack chain hitting against something. If you are sure about the mileage, seems strange. Doues it change pitch, or stop, when you pull the clutch in?

I think you are right. I think it may be the primary chain. I did find some good info about the primary chain on Goldwingdocs...

"I think he's talking about the primary chain, which links the engine to the transmission, internally. It's a big, thick chain that has no adjustment. It can make a rattling noise that sounds like your crankcase is full of marbles. Under heavy load, and particularly when the carburetors are not properly balanced, it can make a terrible noise. The best way to mitigate it is to balance your carburetors - and it is very finicky, so make sure they are balanced EXACTLY right."

I think I will try to SYNCH the carbs before I rip into the motor. Anyone know if I can rent a CARBURETOR SYNCHRONIZER from Pep Boys or other parts store?

A sync is good idea. It will make the chain jerk a bit at lower RPM's. I would be suprised if you could rent one from an auto parts store. To do it you need all four carbs hooked up to individual gauges. Might find a member near by that could help you out

If I can not rent one, I will most likely just buy one. It sounds like a handy tool to have. I just hope Synching the carbs cures the rattling noise. I'll let you know... Thanks for the help.

If I lived closer, I'd come over and show you how to use one. I have seen a good sync solve a rattling chain before. And at that mileage, I doubt it is worn out

Google carb synchronizer and there are ways to make your own. I use tubing filled with atf. I balance the two on the right, the two on the left, and then the right side to the left side. It seems to work fine. If you idle jets are plugged, it's futile. If your tank is rusty it's ridiculously futile. Don't ask how I know.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

You can build a set. I built four last year from various parts. I think I bought the gauges from Grainger, 4FLT6, kPa 200, 30 psi. Then I bought tubing & the valve adjuster from a pet store. I also bought four 5mm brass vacuum adapters w/ cap from Motion Pro, San Carlos, Ca., part # 158218, HP part # 08-0218.

Unlikely that your primary chain is worn at 10K miles. My '81 engine had 169K miles on it and even though the valves, bearings and pistons were worn out, the primary chain was still fairly tight.

That sounds more like the starter chain spinning. The sound is coming from directly where the starter chain is.

I was thinking the same thing at first. When I looked that up, I couldn't find any other bikes that have a problem with the starter chain slapping around. Plus, when I rev up the engine, the noise goes away. If it was the starter still spinning, I think it would whine.

Trust me, I have no idea. When I get this thing together I plan to take it down the street to a 20 yr Honda mechanic who has his own shop now and have him take a look at it.

Just have to get it all together first...

Take a pizza down to the mechanic & pick his brain. Unlike me on Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays, maybe he's a nice guy.

Well ya'll, She is just about done.... I have to get the carbs sync'ed, rear brake done, new valve cover gaskets, and road tested, but for now, I am going to give you some pics of how she looks.

I did not go with the dark blue that I thought I was going to like and didn't. The mirrors are off getting painted when I took the pics and and the brake bucket came in just after the pics, so it is now on.

If you recall, when I got this it was a fully dressed purple goldwing, I'll show that image first...

I found a military tail light and some bullet turn signals on ebay. The tail light was 24v but I found some LED 12v bulbs that fit and work perfectly.
