Hmm... Not sure that I'd run the brakes that way, but that's just me... The '78-9 fender is the same style, and should be readily available...

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
How did you decide to clamp the axle? Both F marks aligned and to the front? I’m not sure if the forward/rearward direction of the clamps matter.
Maybe not, but I’d hate to see something happen to you as I wouldn’t get to see what you’re up to.

Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

G'day to Everyone
"Track T 2411" - Yes I agree, I don't like it either, but I like to try things and see how they work out and look.
"Stock" - the braking force is applied against the fork leg.
"Reversed - the braking force is pulling on the two ears attached to the fork leg ??? Not good ???
I reversed it all, dug deep into the pile of junk parts hidden (Dumped) down the side of my workshop which is riddled with Red Back Spiders and found the original 78 front mudguard, it has the tiniest little dent on the trailing end barely noticeable, but took a lot of Coca-Cola and Aluminium foil to remove all the tiny rust spots, acceptable now if I keep up the polish.
As for the fender being readily available, well I have to add $120 for postage and then 10% GST on the total amount payable, this works out expensive and my budget has been cut down harshly.
"ericheath" - I am not sure if it matters which way the arrows point, I am guessing it is so that people tighten the bolts correctly as in the same case as the handlebar clamps. The manual states to tighten the front axle clamping bolts first, this is because the land on that side is higher than the other side and will clamp squarely against the fork end which are the same level, then you tighten the rear and the axle is clamped tight. Do it the other way you will twist the clamping cap out of shape and will probably not clamp the axle tight and might come loose in use?
(I hope all this makes sense?)
Well that's it for this week, I didn't fit the headlight as I fitted the speedo cable (no problem) and the tacho cable but the inner of the tacho cable is too long!
Have to look into Red Back corner for another shorter one (next break).
Pack bags and off to Telfer early tomorrow morning (Monday).
Happy and Safe Riding to Everyone! Peter.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
G'day to Everyone!
Well with a budget of $0.oo for the week I turned to things that have been in the back of my mine for a while.
Made a trolley for the 1500 engine, small and low enough to have it on the workbench, it fits perfectly but could do with a sandblast and a good coat of paint, but that's just cosmetic, the furniture wheels are struggling so I will probably replace them with stronger castors.
Also messing with the hinges on the 1000 false tank covers as they are a pain in the neck when servicing your machine when they are still attached. Will post some pics when finished.
Happy and safe riding to All, Peter.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
Thanks Easter,
I was once wondering how to get a 1500 engine into a 1000 frame, I decided way too much modifications, so I am opting for the easy way and to convert my 1990 GL-1500SE into a naked GL-1000 look alike. A long way to go and I have to finish other projects first.
Ok, so here is what I did for my shelter cover hinges;

Using the plastic tube separators used in a 1500 carbie choke mechanism for the plastic inserts, I then acquire some 5mm rod (from the missus hanging pot plants that are now on the floor ) I cut them to length and use three layers of heatshrink on them.

Continued;
I slip them down the existing hinge points on the shelter frame, insert the plastic tube spacers, then heatshrink 3 short layers onto the ends.
The cut hinges can now be squeezed in a vice to give a snug fit, sandblast them and a coat of paint to be ready to fit.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
Stole the castors off a furniture trolley I have had for years, then welded some ears on the trolley and then weld the castors in place. Real nice now.
Last day of freedom tomorrow, I am hoping to do something with the #1 exhaust system. Time will tell.
Happy and safe riding to All, Peter.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
G'day to All,
I managed to get in just over 80 kms on two and three wheels.
fitted the ignition today, static timed her, then fitted the exhaust muffler, she still needs a load of polish to bring the chrome up, but that will be another day.
I was going to twist straight the tail mudguard, but on closer examination I find that it is perfect and the rear end of the frame is slightly twisted
Next cycle will get a length of scaffold tube and un-twist the rear end
Happy and safe riding to all that can (even those that cant)
Peter.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
Is it the frame or the swing arm? I have had to untwist swing arms before now, they are none too strong. In fact, I believe that I still have that problem on The Swan, which I didn't recognise when I rebuilt it. Fixing that when it gets home.
Randakk reckoned that they may well have been welded up twisted at ther factory, although somehow I can't see that.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
G'day to Everyone
I lowered her to the floor, fitted a threaded rod joiner to each top shockie bolt then screwed a length of threadall into each joiner, slipped a length of straight rod through the grab rail mounts to see how far out she is,then used a length of Aluminium tubing for a strong arm to re-form the tail end, took some gut busting but I am happy with it now.
Hope to achieve more tomorrow.
Happy and safe riding to Everyone, Peter.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
G'day to Everyone,
Well after 44 years she would have to been dropped on the deck a few times.
It has been a busy week for me at home this break (back at work now) My mum nearly died from internal bleeding, just got her to the hospital in time, on the road to recovery now
Dixie got a bad allergic reaction to something and started to scratch herself to death, bleeding in some places, vet gave (sold) us some drugs which cured the problem but the side affects was she lost control of her bladder, so I spent the week sleeping on the workshop floor with her.
On the bike front I have basically finished the 75, just have a couple of rubber grommets and some washers to pick up from the Honda dealer, fill with oil and fuel and she should start. Needs a real good polish though, then licence her
