I am messing about with one of the spare motors that is not in the best of shape and I was going to cut it up so people can see inside and watch it turn over slowly by hand.

there is not much room in there to play with and there is the oil galley right there in the way.

I have been to a couple of auto wreckers after an auto gearbox from a small car, but up to now I cant even find someone that knows what a planetary gear set up is, they just know the make and model of cars and how to put many zeros behind a ridiculous number.

I am sure someone makes just what I need somewhere in the world, just have to find it.

All the best to everyone, Peter.

G'day to All :-D

I am hoping to find an "Off-Shelf" unit so anyone can obtain it and only slight modifications required.

I have been toying with the idea for decades since I had my 1986 Kawasaki Z-1300 with a sidecar attached, I was searching for an Overdrive unit that is on the end of a auto gearbox just where the tail shaft and uni fit, but it seems that Oz cars never had them.

I have looked into reduction gearboxes for industry but it seems all the small ones have nylon gears that I doubt would hold up under a burn out in reverse

If I am successful I will be publishing the findings so anyone can follow.

did nothing much yesterday, sorted out the carport, cleaned up the lathe and milling machine and now I have a trailer full of scrap metal, typewriter parts and swarf to dispose of, including three final drives that I messed up by mixing the shims about. I can not be bothered trying to match them all up again so I am getting a couple off e-Bay as they are cheap enough.

Happy & Safe Riding to All, Peter.

Thanks "5speed", I am glad I was sitting down when I saw the prices.

Anyway, I am now hoping someone might help me diagnose a problem.

My sidecar runs ok, but I am constantly smelling burning oil, but can see no smoke from the exhaust (when stationary)

How would I tell if it is rings? valve stems? valve stem seals?

I have to pull the engine out to fix the naughty neutral light and fit the possible reverse so I can fix the stink then but I don't want to wast money and time fitting components that are not required.

Best, Peter.

Have you done a compression test, or a leak down test on It? I should think that may give you a bit of insight. Valve stem seals wouldn't be to tough a fix while mounted either...You certainly could whip up the needed tools! :)

Rings or valve seals usually produce smoke. A small leak from a valve cover gasket, tach drive seal, fuel pump, can get down on the exhaust enough to smell the burning oil. Also a cam seal or even a small head gasket leak.

A leakdown would only show the condition of the rings. Wouldn't show valve seals. No way to check those really.

G'day to All :-D

Been messing with other things lately so my wings have been neglected.

A compression test I understand :) but a Leak Down Test confused22

I have to get a reliable compression gauge, I don't really trust the cheap home made one I made, it will let me know if they are all the same, but the readings themselves ?????

I got sick of sandblasting with my compressor, only a couple years old but not adequate for the job so I picked up my new one with a bit more punch, had to re-arrange the corner of my workshop to accommodate her, she is still not home, have to modify the shelf leg above it.

Should have flown back to work yesterday but I sheared off the side of a tooth, I get it pulled out today and back to work tomorrow.

Peter, I think you may have enough tools in your shop to repair your own tooth, yes?
If there is one thing I have learned throughout this process it is this: Check your respirator for spiders before you put it on.

G'day to All :-D

Tooth out and stitches healed up enough to eat, took an hour to get the tooth out, roots wrapped around the jaw. crying1

All good now. dancr

Anyway, I just cant help myself and invested in GoldWing #8, she is a 1990 GL-1500 SE, 97,500 Miles on the clock, and in better cosmetic shape than my 88.

Picked her up Tuesday from the other side of town, she had been sitting for a while and was running on about 1 cylinder, had to ride the clutch big time on take off's, rode home at peak hour time 5pm, got lost and got every red light. .... I was not happy :x :x :x

started to strip her down for a thorough clean and lube up of all the things that get neglected, swing arm, steering neck etc.

Se seems to be a Californian model with all the extra tubing (which may all end up in the trash bin), full of road grime and dead insects collected on the wing.

My "Reverse" project has taken a back seat, maybe it will always stay a dream confused22

My latest ingenious idea was to develop an emissions free engine using gone-by technology.

I am trying it out on my 78.

Wadya think? lolol

Best regards, Peter.

G'day to All :-D

since I bought "Another Bike!" I had to do some chores around the house and garden so not much interesting has happened in my life lately.

I have managed to remove the engine and she is sitting on the work bench now, the gear change seal is shot (easy fix) and the neutral light just flickers when it wants to, the plugs were only finger tight, the right bank a bit fouled up.
The pistons in the carbs are stuck solid, thus the terrible ride home.

tossing up whether to split the engine and check everything?

New belts will be fitted.

The final drive and spider are shot!

Just because someone was too lazy to smudge some grease on the drive splines when the tyres were changed (tyres 10 years old) I now have to buy good ones.
