The "Nostril Finger" is my Index finger, mainly used to stick up my nostril to pick out bogeys or to stick screwdrivers into.

I got as far as to mate the two engine halves together and I broke two piston rings. :x :x :x :x :x :x :x

Not happy!

Oh well this gives me time to do all the other things that I neglect around the workshop and house.

Happy and safe riding to everyone, Peter.

Don’t you just hate that when you are doing everything you can to do it right, and you still break stuff.

G'day to Everyone! :-D :-D :-D

Life gets busy, problems arise, sickness sets in, slackness sets in and I slide down to page 2.

Well I finally completed my 1975 GL1000 (#1 project) and got her licenced the other day dancr

But on the test ride on the morning of inspection (when I had the movement permit), I noticed the shift lever sticking during shifting, I had to move it back to rest position with my toes during every shift change (very annoying), the gearshift arm shaft pressing hard against the front engine cover (should be a transmission fit).
And also oil coming from the water pump weep hole (probably connected).
The engine ran erratically and very slow to return to idle, an air leak I suspect, yes I synchronized the carbs to near perfect (which means nothing if you have an air/vacuum leak).

I have removed the front engine cover and contemplating my next move, I am hoping that I don't have to split the engine cases to relocate the lug on the gearshift arm :(

Anyway, back to the Air/Vacuum leak.

The intake manifold rubbers are as hard as glass, well hard anyway, so I am doing an experiment using a set of bad intakes and rubber insulators from a GL-1500.

A while ago I bought a set (of 2) aftermarket carburettor insulators for my 88, I did not like the fit so I shelved them and bought genuine Honda ones.

Firstly I used a bench vice to squash the old rubbers off, working my way around and squashing the rubbers in until the vulcanising gave way.

I then clamped them together using a scrap piece of steel sandwiched between them to hold them together, then used a small screwdriver to scrape away the remaining rubber before treating them to the wire brush wheel.

I then fitted them to the carbs. crossy.gif

Just have to get some thin hose clamps to finish them off.

Next I will try the OEM Honda ones to see how they fit.

As all of us are working with 40+ year old rubber, this could be timely information. Nice find.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Well I found the source of the oil leak out from the weep hole.

The water pump had an "O" ring 37 x 2.0 it is supposed to be 37 x 2.4

Stupid after market gasket kits, I will be sticking to genuine Honda ones from now on unless unobtainable.

I am also guessing that the sticky shift lever is the symptom of a too thin front cover gasket as the gasket gives the clearance from the shifter change shaft to the front cover contact plinth.

G'day "pidjones" and everyone else :-D :-D :-D

Thanks for thinking about me, I feel like someone now dancr

Nothing has happened on the Goldwing front, but I finally amassed enough Ca$h for some parts, a boxful of goodies are on there way down from Partzilla and should arrive any day.

We fostered another doggie for a week, he was gorgeous! took him for a ride in the chair, I think he loved it, we got home, he hopped out, had a drink and a leak, hopped back in the chair and sat there looking at me for five hours.

Hope to have some updates soon when goods arrive.

Happy and Safe Riding to All, Peter.

G'day to Everyone :-D :-D :-D

Sadly Rory had to go home, we miss him heaps :(

Finally got the 88 serviced and all planned modifications done, it is now back on the road.

A box of goodies arrived from Partzilla the other day so the 75 went up on the bench to get back together.

The engine front end went together easy with all the correct parts :-D

I cleaned the air intakes and insulators with Wax and Grease Remover, applied some Seal All to both components and let them cure. ...... I then trimmed the tabs off the GL-1500 carbie insulators with a pair of fine end cutters, then fitted them and used stainless cable ties to finish them off.

Battery on charge and I will kick her in the guts tomorrow morning and synchronize the carbs, take her for a test ride then stick her up for sale.

Happy n Safe Ridin to All, Peter.
