Pedro,
this is how i mounted Dyna coils. the stock coil mounts will work at a pinch. the dyna coil does not sit
exactly flush on the mount , but close enough. oops.... you don't do " close enough "

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
G'day to Everyone!
I kept the same theme on mounting the coils as I don't want to hack the trumpet off the air cleaner box, just had to make a new lower mount a little bit longer than the one I made up for the 1500 coils.
I bought a set of plug leads from the local auto store and just cut them to length.
I flattened my battery cranking her over with no spark plugs fitted to bring up the oil and get some fuel through, so she is now on charge for a couple of hours until I can start her and see if I have fixed the poor running problem.
Happy and Safe Riding to All, Peter.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
Dimension ??? more like Demeter!!
I didn't want to cut the trumpet horn off the air box just in case it mucks up the fuel mixture, I did this on the 88 and she wouldn't run right, actually she was terrible and touching unrideable She started first off and purred like a kitten, she is a different bike! All this AHing about only to find it was a faulty Ballast Resistor.
Oh well a lesson learnt and hopefully others will look at this inexpensive part sooner than I did.
I am just wondering how many GL-1000's were dumped over this little thing???
Its late and raining, so I will take her for a real test run under load tomorrow if the clouds allow me to.
Happy and Safe Riding to All that can, Peter.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
G'day to Everyone,
as you may know a Tumour and Chemotherapy has put a damper on enthusiasm towards my bikes.
I was tinkering with my 75 to get her ready to sell, then an add came up in our local Gumtree from a guy wanting a GL-1000.
I answered him and he was interested.
I was in the middle of fitting a Randakk's carbie kit to the 75 carbies as I don't trust them after market rubbish anymore, I had a tight deadline to complete the 75 to be ready for the inspection and test ride the following day.
the engine started fine but wouldn't run properly, it was absolutely terrible . it didn't sell.
I triple checked everything with the carb rebuild and confident that's not the problem.
it is either camshaft timing or ignition?
Pulled the radiator off and all seems well but belts not tight enough (will tweak them in later).
I have an old set of Dyna pickups coupled together with 1500 coils and an unknown Ohmage ballast resistor.
So decided to make up a test rig to test the coils manually and to test the Dyna pickups under slow manual turning or put an electric drill in the spindle to speed it up, I put a switch in so I can bypass the ballast resistor in full flight and I can easily change the ballast resistor.
I have only tested the Dyna under the turn handle and all seems well, will give it the full treatment tomorrow if I feel up to it.
Yes it is probably all an overkill, but I do need something to tinker with whilst feeling better which comes and goes.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
Remove the ballast resistor. With the Dyna and the 1500 coils you don't need it. I had one here with that same setup. Took it for a ride and it would die when coming to a stop. Start right up but then run rough. I tried runiing/riding it with the starter button held in and it was perfect. Removed the ballast and all is well.
Also, glad to see you up and about.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
G'day to Everyone,
well it has been some learning lessons for me and a few tears at the end
Double checked the timing belts and re-tensioned them correctly.
Re-torqued the head whilst down and did the tappets (minor discrepancies).
Ignition timing, checked and I cant work out how I got it so wrong
3 & 4 (#2 mark) was at least 10 degrees advanced.
1 & 2 (#1 mark) was at least 10 degrees retarded.
No wonder she ran worse than my 40 year old lawnmower.
Ok, set it up correctly with #2 mark first, yes! .......... Hmmmm! something is still wrong, I set it up on "F" spot on but one rev of the crank and its out at least 5 deg, another turn on the crank, spot on!
Stupid magnetic spinning head is not 180 degrees opposite to each other
Took the Dyna unit out of the 76 and fitted it, spot on, on both cranks.
Ok this should fix the problem ............. No!
a lot smoother but still no pep.
Did a compression test = 42, 45, 44 & 40
I should have bored her out when in bits, so now its strip down for a bore-out and new pistons.
But my enthusiasm has waned out so I drained the fuel, removed the battery and parked her up in a dark corner of the car-port for another day.
will now put some effort into the 76 outfit which I have been robbing components to prove/disprove 75 faults.
Hoping I feel better tomorrow.

Are those psi numbers? Are you sure there are rings on the pistons? I often times find that shelving a project gives me new insight and renewed enthusiasm for it. Continue the healing, friend. You can come back better than before!

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
Possibly bent all the valves for compression that low? All valves adjusted at the wrong marks could also cause that. The “two mark” cam pulleys might cause that. Tossing possibilities that might save a full tear down, but tear downs haven’t phased you like most of us.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
Glad to see you well enough to 'tinker'!
Your ignition test rig is a work of art - most impressive.
The offset Dyna 'cam' is not the first time I've heard of. I would give Dyna a shout, They are usually good at sorting out problems.
Those compression numbers are the lowest I've ever seen on an engine that would still run.

G'day to Everyone,
well I am not sure about the compression gauge itself, it could be way out???
I forgot to mention that I also did an engine leakdown test whilst still warm, they were all 10% leakage which I understand is very acceptable.
For my own benefit I will be removing the heads and measuring the bores, I only have a Vernier Calliper which can only measure the top rim, will buy the correct measuring gear and find out the truth.
Happy and Safe Riding to All, Peter.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
Yeah, a leakdown of 10% doesn't chime with those compression readings. Suspect gauge I agree.

Pedrotq, it's great to hear you still working on your motorcycles !! I showed that test bench to a plant engineering professor and he told me if you are at least an electrical engineer because it is really well done.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
G'day to Everyone,
Well Paola Zago, I did my apprenticeship with Olivetti (now gone) they were the world leaders in innovation, design, style and perfection, the early electronic units had wiring harnesses that were a work of art.
I felt a little better today, boxed up the 76 as I cannot get her going first, the 75 has priority.
Pulled the radiator and timing belts, tomorrow I will perform a leakdown test in different stages of compression to see if the cylinders are barrel shaped. Yes the engine is cold, but I am hoping to see similar results wherever the pistons are within the bores.
