Re: Next bike project
Yep. No such thing as too much detail.
Thanks for the 'Play by Play'
(nice work benches)

Re: Next bike project
Thanks Hott. Made the smaller welding table when I put the LS engine in my Miata. The larger (4'x8') is the main parts cart/table. It allows me to have most of the parts in one place & its easy to move around.
More updates... Took 9.6 lbs of nuts, bolts, washers, rear brake stay & brake rod to be plated. Should have them back by the end of the week. Also took the frame and 35 bits & pieces to be powder coated. Was originally going with gloss black, but Brent convinced me to go with the 80-85% gloss. Its a polyurethane blend, resists chemicals and scratches better than the gloss. I'll post some pics when I get them back.
Took the rear wheel/brake assembly apart
Rear brake panel slides out once axle is removed
This is where the brake stay attaches to the brake panel
A little more detail, note the rubber washer
With shoes
Without
Might use the original shoes, still have enough material on them
Stock sprocket is 38 teeth. Looks like the chain came off at some point, but in good condition.
I put in the box for plating. We'll see how it comes out.
If you look close, you'll see there's an o-ring on the hub sealing the hub to sprocket. NLA, so I'll need to do some searching.
The four bolts that hold the sprocket in place sit inside rubber mounted cushions
Removing the seal (NLA, its in good shape, so will be reused) exposes the snap ring which holds the bearing in place
Bearings and center collar. Couldn't find a good way to remove the bearings without tapping the center race. Fortunately, new ones are available.
Tire & spokes removed. Spokes look good, but the tire is two sizes too big (3.50x18). Stock size is 3.00x18
Rim isn't in the best shape. Plenty of rust and scratches from putting on new tire(s). Will need to rechrome or look for another

Re: Next bike project
More updates
Took the front wheel hub apart to clean it and put in the pile to be polished
Finishing up the forks. This one had water & ?
Cleaned up and partially assembled - just need to polish the tubes
To identify right from left. The left always gets a mark of some sort (here its a prick punch)
Brent from Tough Coat called - parts were ready!
They even came gift wrapped.
Weather was in the 70's here today, so I took the wing out for a 320 mile stretch
Polishing is next, maybe later this week.

Re: Next bike project
Deb isn't real happy with me. Seems all the packages are mine
Zinc plated parts came back from Kalamazoo Metal Finishers
They're shinier than the OEM finish, but will dull a little with time.

Thanks Neil

Forgot to mention costs on the plating. Their min charge is $75, but when I showed up with my 9.6 lbs; they only charged me $50

Re: Next bike project
Not much to report, but did make some progress
Chased the threads on the all the powder coated parts
NOS petcocks are obsolete unless you want to pay the long dollar, so i thought I'd take a stab at cleaning & rebuilding it
Leaving fuel in the tank didn't do it any favors. all the ports were plugged
Put the parts in the ultrasonic cleaner for numerous cycles. Ended up drilling out the ports and then more time in the UC.
Still waiting on petcock parts, but here's the parts ready for reassembly
Put together the forks, after making a driver tool for the seals. Its made of 1" & 1 1/4" PVC.
Here's the parts ready to be installed along with the seal
PVC seal driver
After seals are in, snap ring go on
Chrome covers had to be tapped off because of corrosion & dirt. Normally they would rotate & pull off
Finished!
Weather is suppose to be sunny & 60 tomorrow, so I'll try to finish polishing some of the other parts.

Really enjoy the detail with the pictures. Probably never see the finished product in person so the pictures are really nice.

Re: Next bike project
Thanks
Few more updates
Polished the other parts, but they need a little more work. Will need to buy some small dremel tool wheels or ???
Took more stuff to get plated. I should have enough nuts, bolts, washers & brackets
Spokes looked real good, but was told the threads would need to be chased.
Put together the kick stand
Passenger pegs
and the driver foot pegs
I have an new wiring harness, but it was sitting who knows where? and the connectors need to be cleaned. Wasn't sure what to use, so I took some Tarn-X and tried it on the old harness.
Left is cleaned - Right not. Looks better than the picture shows
