I am glad it is moving along as well! No point in just gathering dust.

Today I unwrapped the header and cut it apart a bit, as I knew it had to be widened to accommodate the 1200 block. So, had a new center pipe ready to go in, and after a few cuts we were able to mount the turbo! Had to tilt and spin the turbo mount to clear the throttle body. Fits good now!

I am thinking of cleaning up the welds a bit, and having it ceramic coated so it didn't rust so bad. The header wrap that was on it held water in nicely, and rusted it pretty good.

I forgot to say that I was in contact with the guy that made "custom" rods, and he wouldn't give me the time of day, much less even look at what a Wing rod looked like.

So, now I am not sure if I should pull this engine down, or just take it easy and see how it goes.

I have the ceramic coating on Dragon Wing, it is expensive but does hold up well.

Figure a little update was in order.

I had made a bracket to hold my main gauge to the lower part of my upper triple tree clamp. I also had to modify the clamp to accept the main gauge. For some reason, I didn’t take a picture of that. The parts went on a quick trip out to member TomK1960 for some awesome powder coating!

I had mounted it on the bike, and decided to put the headlight on as well.

Thanks! Trying to decide if a small fairing is in order, or if I leave well enough alone.

I just pick up this thread and read about your search for rods. There has been an ad on Kijiji every once in awhile with someone in Canada close to the Detroit area selling a set of Carrillo rods for a GL 1100. I am not sure if the GL 1100 and GL 1200 rods are the same?
He was asking $600 Canadian for the set from what I recall and will look for the Kijiji link to see if I can find it. This maybe the same guy and set as I couldn't find them on Kijiji now.

Thanks for the link! Unfortunately, 1200 rods are different from 1100’s. I want to say that there is a possiblity of 1000 rods being the same as 1100. Good find for someone!

I like the 'fly screen' look, myself... I'm going to have to go back through this thread and refresh my memory...

I have never really cared to ride a bike totally naked, which is why I am leaning toward a fly screen or a small fairing.

I never minded it when I was younger, then put a small screen on my Yamaha and loved it. Didn't replace it when it got wrecked, and it took some getting used to. Now I'm spoiled again having the Interstate, lol!

Some small screens work, others are really just decoration. Much has to do with their design (good or bad) or their intended function (sport or touring). I can speak from recent experience.

For example, I installed a Yamaha OEM fly screen on my recently-departed, beloved VMax. It was small, attractive, but provided surprising wind protection at mid-to-high speeds.

My also beloved 2nd ZL900 (I had a brand new one off the showroom floor) I modified quite a bit. I added a flyscreen (Airblade) that looked "OK", but was completely decorative. It provided nothing (nothing) that I could detect with regard to wind management.
3430.jpg
3430.jpg (82.72 KiB) Viewed 411 times
Then there's the Viper fairing I put on my current '78. They are dirt cheap, easily sourced and look decent. But, wind protection is only gained if you lay down on the "tank" in full tuck position. (That's by design). Riding upright with it, I think, is worse than naked as the wind hits directly on the chest. Doable, but not perfect. Sort of a compromise, I guess.

Yea, I had a flyscreen on my V-max when I had it, and ended up pulling it off for a slightly bigger windshield. I do agree some are just for looks!

With the handlebars that are on this, I will be crouched over a fair amount. Probably enough to end up looking for rear set pegs for it.

Time will tell what I end up finding...
