I picked up some more bodywork for it. The paint isn’t great on them, quite a bit of scratches in the paint, but this allows me to have two different set of clothes for the old girl.

I can re-paint this set gloss black, and the original set a bit more flashy.

I realized today that many of my photos are photobucket garbage now. I will try to go through my posts and make it so everyone can see if if they wish. I did find an attachment for Google Chrome that will let me see the highjacked photobucket pictures, but don’t want everyone to have to have this if they are looking on an Apple device.

I think it looks great--but I can't turn my head sideways enough to be sure. Run the photos through your computer before posting and they will turn out right side up, I think (works for me anyway).

Darn glitch with an I product...We’ll see if that fixes it!

I have to “fix” the pictures and they seem to be straight. My actual computer is only really used to clear codes on my commuter pile of a car.

No pictures for this update, but figured I would mention it anyways. I have been a little worried about how high an RPM I will be turning with the 16” Lester and the stock 1000 pumpkin.

In my many projects, I picked up the 1200 that donated it’s heart to this project. The swing arm and pumpkin sat in the shed just waiting for me to realize that they could be used, and would add stability and a little more relaxed RPM range while cruising, as well as get a few more mph on top end when it called for it.

So, pulling it out, I had the idea to put one of the Lester rims I have on it. Needed a couple parts to make it maybe work, and decided that a 1500 wheel looks a lot like a Lester, so we ordered up a 1500 rear wheel and brake that will fit on the 1200 pumpkin. The Lester will go back in the box till I decide what to do with it.

My plans are to make this system sort of a swap. If I want to do short runs with better acceleration, I will put the 1000 setup back in it, but if I am cruising, or doing more top speed stuff, the 1200 stuff will go back in it.

This means I need to keep two sets of everything around, but also gives me the chance to paint the 1000 pumpkin black, and polish the 1200 to a high shine. This will give the bike a different look. Perhaps I will switch the plastics when I switch the swing arms... :2thumbs

Stay tuned... anim-cheers1

Keep us updated on how that 1200 rear fits onto the 1000 frame. I just put a 1100 rear end, swingarm, and wheel onto a 1000 and it just took some machinework and a new ujoint. That got me a 9% decrease in rpm with the same tire size. I was under the impression that rear parts from a 1200 would not fit at all, but I've not looked at any.

Very true!

This will be as close to a quick change rear end as I can get...pull the swing arm pins, pull out the driveshaft, and disconnect the brake line. Roll other in place, fight with circlip, put pins in, and hook up and bleed brake.

Looks good in theory, now to see if it applies! :IDTS:

It appears that the 1200 swingarm will fit by doing some cutting on the swing arm, and relocating the bearings further in board. Time will certainly tell! If my math is close to right, I should be spinning around 2800 at 60 mph. This is in contrast to the 3600 estimated RPM at 60 with the stock rearend and a 16” Lester.

using a stock 86 1200, and a stock 1000 rear drive, with a lester 16" wheel, I get 4000 RPM and 70 MPH. Keeps the engine in the right power band to accelerate with out shifting, even from lower speeds. And running in the power band help gas mileage,.......works for me anyway

True enough. This one should run very close to what a stock 1200 would turn. The only difference is the potentially taller tire, being this is a 16” rim.

Just for comparisons, we will take a Metzeler tire. The 1200 takes an ME880 while the 1500 takes an ME880 XXL

The stock 1200 size is 150/90-15. If taking a stock size tire, that gives it an overall height of 26”.
The stock 1500 size is 160/80-16. Again, taking a stock tire, that gives an overall height of 27.4”.

Now, saying all that, I seem to like the Avon Cobra tires for my other rides, which gives an over dimension of 26.2.
Turning 70 mph will net roughly somewhere around 3275-3300 RPM.

I seem to recall that the 84 gearing is slightly different, but I have certainly been wrong before! :-D

Mine with a 1500 final drive, 160/80/16 Avon turns slightly less than 1mph/50rpm in fifth gear — 1200 motor/tranny/swingarm. So 60 is 3000, 80 is 4000, maybe 1mph less at 60.

I liked the 1200 with 1000 final drive and an 18” Lester, except first gear. It was too jerky at slow speeds. Might have been my carbs. When I let off in gravel it was tricky. I could take off at idle in second gear, one rider, level ground. Before I bobbed it, when the wife was with, I usually took off in second gear.

I had hoped for better mileage with the 1500 final drive, but it isn’t much different.

I can’t remember which motor you put in, 84 yes? would be slightly taller geared due to a different primary and secondary ratio as I recall.

I still want to try the 83 swingarm and final drive just to compare. It might be the best fit for overall performance with my power plant.

Although it has shown no problems with handling, I’m not crazy about the offset of the 1200 swingarm. It’s a half inch left of the front tire.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Eric and Doug, I want to publicly thank you both for all that you have told me about the 1200 setup, both on the forum, and behind the scenes in PM’s. You both have done all these different things, and know what works, and what doesn’t. As far as I know, we are the only ones on the forum that have these in 1000 frames.

As far as the engines, I am relying on some leg work that was done by a fella on another forum, so hopefully it is right. Seems the 1200’s had the same primary reduction of 1.71, (all 4 cylinder Wing engines are the same this way) but then the secondary reductions is different between years. The 84 is .897, while the 85-86 was .973. The 87 has a .976 reduction.

I am hopeful that I can get the rear wheel to line up slightly better, but time will tell what we find.

Here is the spreadsheet I am using for my info. This was done by SuperSkypilot on the Saunders forum. I have posted this before, but still fun to look at.

On a slight side note, I went through my thread here, and took out any photobucket linked pictures, and put them back in as best I could. The only pics I couldn’t get on were the shots of my gas tank, due to having more than 5 pictures in the thread. I also went through and straightened up the pictures that were posted by my IPad, so now everything to this point will be posted correctly.
