Black/white wire to both terminals on one end, yellow to the other terminal on one coil and then blue to the corresponding terminal on the other coil. (these are the terminals left over after connecting the black/white). I have done this two or three times so that makes me a "real expert" but Robin is backing me up and he knows what he is doing.

Sorry GLtracker, didn't see your post. I was trying to say the same thing.

tumb2 Easier.....as a "real expert" you don't need backup from anybody.
You got it right this time. ;)

I didn't get the magic leaflet in my box, so many thanks Cliff for copying it. Thanks Easter too, looks as if I can put this one to bed, another one soon down!

Hoping to at least get the engine running this year. Hard to believe how much fun I'm getting...

Thanks again for all the help, I'm slowly following Easters instructions. Also pressing on with other bits and pieces, pics to follow!

Still working through the electrics but got a little problem, or two. My wing is a GL1000 probably registered 1978. Have a look at the pics,

Looking first at the ignition switch detail on the best diagram I have found so far, it shows 6 wires out. My switch, next pic, has only 4 wires out.

again, 3rd pic, 6 wires out of the turn switch but my switch has just 4.

If anyone can give me a steer on this I would love to have it!

Just a thought but are you working with the UK version of the bike and the wiring diagram?
They were both different depending on which side of the pond you were on.

Yes it must be a UK version, but finding the right diagram is something else. The one I have seems to correctly fit with most of the wiring and is better than the others I have tried

I'm guessing now but I suspect the difference for the ignition switch variation is that the US version has the headlight on all the time which then requires that it be momentarily turned off when the starter button is pushed. Again a guess but the turn signal variation might be due to the absence of running lights (double filament bulbs requiring two positive wires).

Thanks Easter, got son in law (electrician) to look at it today and he has sorted them and a few other snags I was stuck on.
Don't normally call on him for help as he lives some miles away and is busy rebuilding his house but was in luck today

And the next question!

I'm guessing here, so someone can put me right, please, I think this is a resistor, but don't know for sure, or where it's supposed to go

Thing is, I stripped it down 4 years ago never thinking it would take so long...

Looks like a resistor they used to use on old cars as part of the ignition system...I think my Olds has one. I forget exactly how it's hooked up, but it was to one side of the ignition coil IIRC. I'm sure someone here will know for sure...

Ah, just beginning to think it may be the ballast for the coils, I'll put the meter on it tomorrow
Thanks!
