POST #62 a small update (actually HUGE in my mind)

My fuel tank is now correctly and completely cleaned and sealed with POR15. Quite an ordeal, but satisfying to no end!!
The first photo was taken through the filler neck. UPDATE! :oldies 8/01/2021. POR15 is still doing its job!
I half expected to see an ALIEN show up in this shot. ( where's Sigourney Weaver? tumb2 ) OR, this might be a sonogram?
DSCN0151.JPG
DSCN0151.JPG (40.92 KiB) Viewed 1049 times
The second photo was taken through the fuel level sender hole.
I had unknowingly reamed too far into the main fuel supply tube, with a section of an old clutch cable chucked in a drill motor, and its protruding end then destroyed the debris screen.
The reserve supply tube screen wasn't damaged..... I never got the "reamer" that far in to damage it.
( Note how the reserve supply tube arches up and back down as it passes under the destroyed main screen on its way to the reserve pickup screen?.)
You will inevitably get liquid POR15 tank sealer on the strainer screens.
Solution? Don't panic .
Simply, Blast pressurized air through both fuel delivery pipes on the petcock mounting pad while the sealer is still fluid .
DSCN0159.JPG
DSCN0159.JPG (22.11 KiB) Viewed 1049 times
IMPORTANT! :oldies
Be absolutely sure that all the cleaning liquids have been completely purged out of the fuel pickup tubes before the POR15 fuel tank sealer is poured into the tank.
The POR15 sealer won't adhere to a damp or wet surface.

Today, a fellow nicknamed "Bummer" bent the exhaust pipes for the trike.

I couldn't decide how long to make them, therefore Bummer gave me some extra length so I could tailor the installed appearance. The extra? length actually looks pretty good!! My youngest son told me to leave them that long.

The project's timing belts covers are on. tumb2
I removed the radiator when I realized how much easier it would make the covers installation job.

It does exactly match the rest of the bike, of course. The fairing stays, but the bags are out.
DayGlo Orange be too much? just kidding!!!

If I had another rear Lester, (I've already been offered one earlier this year, but don't have the cash for it, at this time) I was thinking several months ago how interesting 3 Lesters might look altogether. We'll see how the initial project turns out. in the meantime...... I'm imagining the narrow tires would look way out of proportion with the GM 10bolt, though.

Seems like the combination of 10 bolt brakes and tires is better for a trike. It would be good to get some un-sprung weight off back there, but no simple way to do it.

Thanks gearhead, there's more to come. The project didn't go back to the dreaded zero state of progress.
I've accomplished little bits here and there since last time I posted. plus, I started the engine again after more than a year, last Thursday. I was just a little tempted to slip it into 1st gear, but resisted the impulse to do so.
There's a few engine performance bugs to correct, most notably a vacuum leak/s issue, before I'll put the seat on and summon my priceless machinist friend and next door neighbor, both to witness the "maiden voyage" of the trike in my yard. It's just been too hot/humid outside for me to think and work, so I skipped the past 3 days.
anyhoo..... early tomorrow I'll get back to it! and take a few photos of progress to post in the coming days.

Before coupling the rearend to the swingarm, for the final time!, the drive pinion retaining nut was Loctited in place and I dumped the whole contents of the Honda 60% Moly grease tube into the driveshaft coupler and bolted them together.
note to Tim-- I did fill the punkin' with 2 qts. of gear oil several days ago tumb2

I'd bought and installed 2 new rebuilt calipers w/brackets, 2 new rotors and a set of brake pads from NAPA several weeks ago. I was pleased the 15" wheels' ID was not a clearance issue with the calipers.

For the folks familiar with the GM rear disc brake system, you've probably already recognized there's a lot of typically unseen real estate visible where parking brake components, dust shield, etc., are not there any longer. As Jeff had noted in one of the last posts, there's a bunch of unsprung weight back there with that 10 bolt set-up. I'd already pared away a few pounds off the cast component that carried the aforementioned "missing" pieces. A little bit here, a little bit there....

ciao for now!
