there!I've realy enjoyed your (Threesome) built so far and can't wait to see the finished trike!
Thanks, Ccarel1 tumb2
Some fellows say it isn't finished without rear fenders
Since very late 2012, until May, 2020 It and I have travelled over 30,000 miles; without fenders.

Until I added the saddlebags in 2015, very little rain would get onto me as long as we were moving.
The large front fairing and its windshield protected all but my boots and pants cuffs.
Rooster tails off the rear tires were always very entertaining to see in the rearview mirrors. tumb2

The addition of saddlebags the night before I rode to the 2015 Paris, Ontario Fairgrounds Rally significantly changed the airflow dynamics around the back of the trike. On my ride home, rain started falling and totally unexpected, suddenly my back and helmet were getting soaked and rain was wetting the back side of my windshield, too!
Exhaust fumes would surround me enough to give me a headache if I slumped down and didn't keep my face in the wind.
I believe my trike riding days are almost finished since I broke my neurologically weakened right leg in 2018. c'est la vie :(

Yes, Jim was a unique fellow. It has been almost 2 years since I last saw him alive in a nursing center.
The 2020 March shut-down prevented me from ever seeing Jim again. He died around 2 months later.

Also agree with Gord, that each ride you took was a tribute to his efforts. Most fortunate for your acquaintance with Jim and without a partner like that your Threedom would be limited. I do know how well you both worked together. Covid shutdown was bad timing for your situation for sure. Think the Trike is a trophy now!

Trike's engine, cylinder leak down rate test results

#364

Post by gltriker »

My 1975 GL1000 engine's cylinder leak down rate varies from approximately 4% to 7% across all 4 cylinders.
Yes, I have tested the individual cylinder pressure leak down rates many times over the last 8 years this engine was running.
Yes, I do believe those numbers are realistic on these engines; only when each complete combustion chamber is operationally "healthy" , though.
-----
notes:
* 1-the Air compressor must maintain a constant supply of more than 100 psi delivered to the cylinder leak down rate tester. On this tester's gauge face, 0% = 100 psi.
( Refer to the User Information Instructions that accompany your leakdown tester)

* 2-A compression tester adaptor hose (or other 12mm test fitting) can be utilized for leakdown testing after its integral 'schrader' type, threaded-in check valve core is first removed. view this example- https://www.ngwclub.com/forum/download/ ... p?id=89308

VERY IMPORTANT! Keep fingers away from exposed PINCH/CRUSH Timing Belts and Pulleys Before and During the insertion of pressurized air into a Tested Cylinder!! AND be 100% clear the transmission has been/ IS selected to NEUTRAL, TOO!

Maybe I'll call it Threedom? nope... I called it trike

#366

Post by gltriker »

I suppose so, Jeff ;)

The first time I had Cylinder Leakdown Rate tested the 1975 GL1000 trike's engine was 10 years ago. At the time the bike had 7,831 miles on its odometer.

Upon installing my Kohler engines Leakdown Tester assembly onto the first cylinder to be tested and inserting regulated air pressure, The Leakdown Tester gauge's displayed percentage of Cylinder pressure loss reading was so  minimal, I had suspicions my tester was affected somehow. hmmmm....🤔

After a few moments of my puzzlement passed, I very slowly pushed down on the kick start lever to roll the crankshaft off TDC . Didn't require much rotation of the crankshaft for the applied air pressure to suddenly spin the crankshaft towards BDC.
The tester gauge reading dropped to 100% loss. Expelled out the exhaust port.

The leak down test numbers in these photos ( up there ) and individual Cylinder Compression test numbers ( next post down ) were taken when the trike's original odometer displayed almost 39,000 miles.
2 years ago. My last ride probably.

Trike's engine, cylinder compression testing video and photos

#367

Post by gltriker »

I've added this very brief compression test video and photos to my trike's "build thread" for historical purpose,
The Snap-On gauge needle is twitchy at the higher readings. The needle climbs to 150ish psi in 10 compression strokes though :-D Crank the engine until the needle won't climb any higher. Yes. All intake and exhaust valves' lash clearance are set at 0.006 inch.

note: to achieve most accurate cylinders pressure testing results, use a correct testing adapter.

Cliff,

I have a leak down tester and I have found that a smaller amount of pressure in the 40-50 PSI range works well. I am following more of what a online rebuilder posted for smaller bore fours, which the GL series is not small bore.
I think his reasoning was the higher pressure of the 100 PSI + can start to turn the piston being measured off TDC.

I have never done Wing engine.... as all mine are PERFECT! lolol

That's my hope anyway, as the Wings both run great. :crosso
Current Bikes:

1966 CL77 - Honda 305cc - Dual purpose - "Gentleman's Scrambler" was a period moniker.
1967 CL175K0 - Low production number with #802 engine serial- winter 2019/2020 full restoration.
1972 CB350F - Baby Four with low mileage - Cosmetic refresh to the next level 2021/2022.
1978 CB550K - Very original bike with only 7499 Km. from new - light cleanup and refresh done.
1983 CB1100F - Canadian model - DOHC Supersport in pristine low kilometre condition from new.
1984 GL1200 - Standard model in showroom condition - two owner bike from new.
1984 CX650E - Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model - excellent one owner bike.

I agree; if the crankshaft unexpectedly starts to rotate away from Top Dead Center, simply let it go and start over again. The probability of getting injured hands at 100 psi is very real.
:oldies Welllllll, you know now, you have to test both PERFECT Wing engines to give me a benchmark for comparison sake. tumb2
