The larger head of the flat top bolt will certainly take more axial load than stock. Nice solution for sure.

This is an attempt to show y'all some of the other photos collected re: a timing belt tensioner rebuild.

The ShopTalk tensioner rebuild tutorial advises to use a .500" drill bit to remove the bearing stud and pulley. The baseplate and stud are both an easily drilled steel. The stud is a press fit into the leading edge of the baseplate bore. Basically, you are just removing some of the staked area. After relieving the staked area, punching the stud and bearing free can bend the plate. A 14mm bit would be the best bet, not to warp the plate. (mine were both slightly bent. I pressed in the other direction to make them flat, again)

Here is the underside of the previously disassembled baseplate, with no change to its original bore, with an example of the flathead screw I used, too. Note: If you look at the taper of the screw, close to the top edge, and the very top edge of the taper bore in the plate, you can see a thin shiny witness line of contact between both components. This confirms the screw and plate have different countersink angles. Therefore, the countersink angle must be corrected in the plate to match the screw. The most common angle is 82 degrees. But, there is a 90 degrees, and a 100 degrees variation, too.

When the screw is installed into the not as yet modified countersunk hole in the plate, the head of the screw stands 'proud' of the baseplate.

This photo isn't real clear but, the intent is to show how and why I had to alter the screw's taper projection through the plate, which before modifying, was preventing it from clamping the pulley tight against the top of the plate.

Compare the modified 10mm flathead countersunk screw, to the original sample.

So...... there it is. MY method.

Bottom line? Matching the countersink tapers of the screw and the baseplate are the keys to making this work.

That is a pretty good looking install gltriker. Looks like you had to remove less material on the bolts than I was first thinking.

Thanks Robin.
When I had commited myself to presenting more detail re: MY method, I then removed one of the already installed tensioners, to disassemble it to show dimensions, etc.; especially the now matched countersink tapers of the baseplate and flat head screw. Also, a relative measurement of the amount of stock removed from the modified screw's taper, as compared to an unmodified screw. A resourceful experimenter/fabricator will figure it out, anyway. ;) Just don't get too enthusiastic with material removal in the baseplate!! Screws can be replaced if need be. Take the proverbial, Baby steps.
But, It didn't want to come apart!! :shock: Blue Loctite, complementing the nylock nut's retention break-away torque spec, proved more than capable to the task.
I grudgingly said, 'good nuff', and reinstalled it to the engine.

I'm looking forward to less whining generated somewhere near the front of the engine. It may be 'normal' operating noise, amplified by the Pacifico fairing but, I can hope, can't I? :lol:

I snapped a few more photos this afternoon, this time of the screw example I used to perform MY tensioner rebuild method.Note the dimension of 7mm from the top of the screw head to the beginning of the 10mm threads.

I don't have a personally verified, measured thickness dimension for the baseplate. But for the sake of having a number, let's use a 4.5 mm dimension I noted in a hand drawn sketch found in another thread.
As noted before, the largest diameter edge of the unmolested hole, after having just removed the stud and pulley from the baseplate, is approximately 16mm. And, the important dimensions of the screw remain as before.

The flat head surface of the screw, will be positioned flush with the underside of the baseplate, by judicious removal of stock in the process of matching the countersink angles of the pre-existing hole, and the flathead screw.

With the flush position of the screw head noted, subtract 4.5mm baseplate thickness from the screw head's countersink surface 7mm dimension to arrive at the approximate amount of stock to be removed from the screw> 2.5mm. Remember, in addition to that dimension, the shoulder created on the screw must be slightly recessed below the pulley side of the baseplate, to prevent interference holding the pulley away from being securely clamped to the plate by the screw and locknut. Let's add another .5mm to be removed for that consideration, too. The final total dimension to be removed is 3mm.

Now, there's a front fender on the trike.

It's a $10 Krylon Fusion rattle can paint job, on a $25 gl1100 eBay fender.
Rode today in a little rain, not much really, and the front of the fairing and windshield were roadspray spot free!
