Well, now, that's a good question, with a very convoluted answer... this bike was originally my step-son Josh's father's. Josh asked me a couple of years ago if he could 'buy' it from me and take over the refresh (with my help, of course). I agreed, mainly because I had gotten Grumpy on the road, and I thought a bike project would help Josh with his 'troubles.' It didn't work out at the time. (For more about Josh, you might check out this thread: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=67088 ).

Josh is now back at home, working, and making plans to tackle this project. I'm hopeful that his issues are behind him and having a goal again will help. We shall see!

Seeing as this thread has been revived, I should probably post a status report. Much earlier in the thread, I posted about some damage to the original engine block I discovered while first working on the bike. At that time, I decided it would be prudent to swap in another engine (which I already had) rather than attempt a repair. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=56610
Josh decided he wants the 'original' engine, so we've undertaken that repair. He carefully 'opened up' the cracks with a dermal, trued up the gasket surface, and installed a stud using JBWeld. We ordered a rebuild kit for the water pump, and will be doing that while we wait for the full engine gasket set to arrive. From there it's the usual to - do list; forks, shocks, brakes, etc, along with whatever cleanup and painting he decides to do. I'm trying to encourage limiting the purely cosmetic stuff until he gets it road worthy.

Whoa TT. I must be slipping, I forgot it was your story and I had previously read through your entire thread sequence on this bike. Kudos to you for continuing to carry the torch. I feel for you. I have my own set of issues with an older son - different and no law involved, but issues all the same.

We ordered an engine gasket set Friday, and received it today! Josh spent a few hours cleaning up gasket surfaces and other engine parts. I'm trying to keep the reins just loose enough so that he doesn't get frustrated, but tight enough that he does things right. It's like walking a tight rope for me. I'm hoping that he'll settle into a slower (calmer) pace as things progress.

Here's a couple of pics of the repair mentioned earlier. We used high temp JBWeld. It's cured for several months now, lol! We had to remove several of the shifting components for access. I thought I had pics before they were all reinstalled but I can't seem to find them... Josh is just about ready to install the transmission cover. We need to go through the gasket set and identify all the various o-rings and seals. What a PITA!

So, there has been progress, if only in fits and starts. The valves and heads have been cleaned up and are ready to assemble. The water pump has been rebuilt as well. Hopefully Josh will have enough gumption to get the engine back together in the next couple of weeks. While I make myself available to help him, I've made it a point that it's up to him to do the work, which can be frustrating, but it's the only way he's going to learn what it takes to finish a major project.

Hope you have better luck than I did with the grandson. Soon as his bike started giving him trouble, he parked it on the patio and there it sits. He has enlisted and leaves in about 4 weeks so this is probably a dead horse unless I go get it.....again.

Do not settle for bad cams. A doner engine with low miles is cheap and provides more parts.

I helped Josh sort through the gasket set, flipping through the parts diagrams on Partzilla.com to locate and identify the assorted o-rings. Pretty much a PITA, that! I don't think he could have figured it out himself without flying off the handle. I'm not sure what to expect when he gets to the carbs, lol!

Is he going to rebuild them, or would he be better off having them rebuilt? I sent mine off to Pistol Pete for a rebuild, and I'm very satisfied with the results. (Pete's son Mark has taken over rebuilding carbs for him now.)

I've done several sets of 1100 carbs (my first set several times, lol), so 'we' will be doing them. He got a taste of what it's like when he 'kinda sorta' helped on our '76 project, and he's getting better at following through with tasks. I think he's finally figured out that not only am I not going to do the work for him, I'm not going to poke and prod him either. I'll gladly help when he asks, show or tell him how to do a task, and (hopefully) catch any big mistakes. The rest is up to him...
