Certainly appreciate all the congrats and such, need to buy my hats two sizes larger now. But this build continues, just not very much during the riding season. Working on some new rear saddlebags that were an anniversary gift.

TM1(SS) wrote:Hey Fred, great job on that motor bike and congrats on BOTM, well deserved. Three years of work but as I've read your thread I think you enjoyed most of it and the result speaks for itself. Are you getting bored and going to have to dive into another? Angus
You are right Angus, three years but very little that can be considered work. I needed this bike as there just was not enough wrenching going on in my life due to unique cause. It will change as my boys get cars they can afford lol. But wrenching on GL just makes me smile. I have another bike that was purchased as a "parts" bike but since I have learned there is no such thing. Still collecting ideas as it will make a nice custom as some point.

Replaced my November 1984 Dyna III as was dropping two cylinders when cold, yet all would fire strong when warm. But getting some 27 years out of a ignition system is nothing to complain about. New Dyna S in its place, and she now runs strong cold or hot. Very nice night to ride this evening, even got to ride with Inspector.

Well,
SunnBobb said "Hamster handed me a bag and said "take these". He bought a bunch on ebay and installed them in his bikes, and they are impressive." and then said "The bulb specs are: ba9s base, 5 SMD (surface mount diode)"

So I used Google to pick a source then ordered. Here is a picture with just the tach done;
Image

Believe it or not, but the speedo is still lit although I must say I mostly needed to use the tach for speed at night.

Here is it with both lit with LEDs
Image

Better yet, they go in easy. I remove the plastic cover between the gauges, then removed both the speedo and tach cable, then just removed the two cross screws near the center of each gauge. The brackets needed no attention. The electrical harness is long enough to allow for bulb replacement with just the two screws removed from each. Fifteen minutes if you take a coffee break during installation.

So thank you Hamster and Richard for a very nice upgrade tutorial.

Heck, I can see those from my house. Can't see my own though. I think I'll take a look at those.

I just did a quick look-around. The prices are all over the place. Where from and what color did you get? (I'm thinking blue would be nice for the gauges.)

Mine came from Eversales, and the metal base is thin but they install okay and work great. About $2 per. I used white, but they get a blue tint from the housing and blue would be a good choice too. If I did it again, I would get a lot of 10 as the price gets under $1 per and there are more bikes in my future.

Have you got the site info? What I found were about $4 each. http://www.e92-lighting.com/products/GP ... 07-26.html Did yours look like this? I like the bright lights!

I went with the ones I found on E-Bay. Blue for the clocks were more expensive but will be here quick. It will be 3 weeks before the white ones from Hong Kong show up. $10 for 10 white ones.

The stator kicks out about 300 watts. The '78 has (12) 7 watt bulbs = 84 watts in dash lights. I think the LED's draw 1 watt each. So from 28% of stator output the new number for dash lights will be 4% of stator output. Pretty fair gain in electric power. (Especially since I couldn't see the 7 bulbs in the gauges anyway).

Had good luck with an eBay seller for the 1 SMD version of LED's.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/150623846704?ss ... 315wt_1396

Long shipping time promised, but had them in less than a week. Also I am going after the 23 watt blinker bulbs with 1 watt 13 SMD's in amber. The stock 23 watt blinker and front marker lamps cost 2 amp each as Greg mentions, and getting that down to 4 watts total is a nice saving. I also have an electronic flasher on order as the stock flasher needs over 100 watts to flash correctly. Even the change to the dash indicators of the blinkers slowed the blink rate down on the stock flasher. Oh, and a 13 SMD led went into the tail light too. I used red, but wonder if that should have been white as the licence plate is pretty dim with a red LED in there.

Also added an "ignition on" relay. I noticed my voltage indicator (the Clearwater Voltage Sentry) was typically indicating one volt or less than the actual battery voltage. I had already installed a head light relay to get battery voltage directly to the head light (a huge improvement), my bike already had a battery power lead up front.

So in parallel with the battery feed to the headlight, a second relay now provides power for all the loads downstream of the ignition switch (the feed that goes back into the right handlebar anyway) and the Dyna S ignition. This added at least a volt to my USB phone charger, the seven volt regulator and other stuff. For the first time, my phone can now charge its battery when powered up, as before I had to power down the phone to get even a minimal charge.

Also no issues with the ignition since I updated my 1984 Dyna III with a new Dyna S. Pretty close to being ready for the East Coast Rally and VMDs.

Excellent update there, Jeff (err, Fred ;) ).

So that's why my flashers went into the SLOOOOW lane. Good catch. I may just disconnect that clicker/buzzer now as I have no trouble seeing when a flasher is on.
