They were sandblasted before powder coating.

I was just thinking how I had not seen a good old fashioned metalflake paint job. You know, the ones with the big flakes and all sparkle? With groovy matching schwinn grips.. :)

Gents,
What a blast from the past. I had a helmet like that, only mine was red.

I love the old metal flake paint jobs.
What is the process used to apply them?
Are the multi-layered like the candy paint jobs?

It was many years ago I had a lake blue metalflake paint job on my Norton. If I recall after the primer was a layer of white, then silver. Then we sprayed in flake that I think may have been mixed with clear, then blue. Then coats of clear.
I'm not sure if this is correct because my memory of this is kind of weak now.

This guy makes cool helmets and uses the metal flake paint scheme. I bet he could tell you the process...

Well enough of the ugly helmets and back to the restoration ;). Many Kudos go out to Sunbobb for the excellent polishing job he did on the aluminum components I sent to him. He started work on them the afternoon that he got them in the mail and worked on them the following day and had them in the mail back to me the day after that. Considering that you might think that he took shortcuts but these pieces are professionally done. I am totally satisfied with his work, and those of you that have seen my yellow '82 know that I have a good basis for comparison. There is no way that I could have set myself up to polish these myself for the price that Sunbobb charged me to do the job. I highly recommend him!
