Getting my first red 76 running

#1

Post by Cookie »

This bike has been sitting in my garage since I found the yellow one and by the time I was riding that my wife found me an LTD. Now they are both runners so I'm working on this bike again a bit.
Today I reinstalled the cleaned and sealed fuel tank. While the rear wheel is off for a new tire I'll rebuild the petcock and clean the sender and reinstall that. The sender is a truly rusty piece of crap at the moment, but the tank looked that bad at first too.
This bike will get a single carb, probably a Suzuki tank, and I'm thinking a BMW 7 rear fender.
when I get the wheel back on it so I can look at various equipment in place I'll decide. It would also be a fiarly easy restoration to stock but I have two of those.

Heck,

I think I bought it last November. It keeps moving to the back of the project list and when the Norton gets here I'll probably play with that for a while. The last bike you bought is the most fun.

This one is no rush, I am putting in parts racks beside it tomorrow so I have to tidy that area anyway.
After that I think I may build an extension on my garage before the rainy season as my bikes have taken over. I'm starting to get rust on the bikes I park outside so that may be a priority.
I hope to build this one over the winter, it's so dang stripped now and more has to come off before it's done.

All I did on this bike today was order a tire so a little gain.

Did you ever forget something stupid you've done before? The last time I pulled a radiator I forgot the little overflow tube and spilled antifreeze all over. Yup, I did it again pulling the radiator on this bike. A little very careful work and some gentle heat got the thermostat bolts out, tomorrow I'll drain the oil and I still have to remove the dipstick (add on) to get the timing cover off. Of course the fairing mount had to come too.
