Painting over chrome?

#1

Post by jpbadger9 »

The chrome on my case guards doesn't look so good. Anyone tried painting over chrome? What's the process and were you happy with it? Is the chrome spray paint worth trying, or is it a waste of money?
Maybe I'll go for the blue anodized look........

'Bout the best way to get paint to stick to chrome is to not want it to! If you want it to,it probably won't. Some interesting effects can be created by a semi- transparent color over chrome.

Remove thr chrome and nickel and then paint it like regular steel. Here's one method:

For small parts , the following will suffice. Using a car battery and heavy jump leads placed well away from the two plastic buckets, one containing caustic soda and water, saturated solution. The other bucket has a 50-50 sulphuric acid water solution and a pint of glycerine added. The caustic bath uses a cathode of steel 10 sq inches approx. The acid bath uses a cathode of lead. Use a strip of lead roof flashing 10 sq ins approx. The caustic bath is used first to remove the chrome. Takes a minute or so. rinse the part well then place in the sulphuric bath to strip nickel. Takes a little longer or until effervescing stops on the part. I will let you figg out the correct way to place the electrical wires. Only works one way. Same for both strips. Be careful . Wear gloves, goggles, mask, and have running water close by. No responsibility accepted.

I just scratched it up good with 400 grit. Been painted for 2 plus years now and she is holding up fine.

i would suggest looking on ebay for a non chrome type like just plain alluminum, then scuff up i know my are chromed over and are flakeing bad and that is my plan. the plain allum. ones will scuffeasily and any pitting in the aluminum will help hold the paint.

Yeah I would say sand blast and paint or bead blast. I sand blast chrome parts and powdercoat them often. Have had no problems with that. I suspect painting that way wouldn't be bad either.

I painted almost all the chrome on my 77. scuffed it really good with 60, then 400 and lastly with 800 on the smooth surfaces that needed a good finishing. primed it with a sandable primer and used Nason paint. Works good for me. I think it was Whiskerfish and a few others that pointed me in this direction, It is a heck of a lot cheaper then blasting......thanks again for that Whiskerfish.

I also understand priming with self etching zinc chromate helps.
