and so it begins....again

After finding out after I bought the 78, that other than the engine and tranny (I hope), most everything else is going to need some much neglected attention.
I have the carb rebuild kit from Randakk on the way, and the complete dyna is on it's way as well. The back brake does not work, and will not bleed, and the front brake is dragging. The clutch cable is broke, the throttle cables are sluggish, and the front turns are missing. The tank is going to need a flush, but hopefully I can do that on the bike as I really do not want to take it off.
I didn't get much fro pics befroe the strip-down, but I will be sure to take plenty during.
This will be my second project, and my first on a Honda. My first rebuild was on a 77 KZ650 which I actually enjoyed doing over last winter. I will include some pics of that as well....wish me luck :)

Randakk's kit came yesterday along with the float pins today :-D
I ordered the video as well, and to anyone that is gonna do this rebuild, I HIGHLY recommend getting his video. I went thru the kit last night and I would have to say that his kit is by far the best in quality I have seen.
(sure beats the K&L's)
...so here we go

thought I would include some other pics as well of the cleaning...

does anyone know what the green wire is for that is centered here?

I thought my house had a lot of wiring... :-D

The chrome is peeling on these, and I am looking to replace them..any good sources? I can strip them down and try to polish them out on my bench polisher, but I would like to keep the chrome if I can...
Image
...and yes, I am picking up the belts tomorrow :)

the green wire on mine i considered an extra ground for something that they didnt install. look at the wiring diagram from sidecar bob, maybe it is an extra.

as far as the valve covers go, if your as cheap as me, i would strip off the chrome and read about polishing them on a buffing wheel. there are thread about polishing them and they look outstanding!

keep us posted on your progress.

I have a 1 1/2 hp polisher with all the wheels and compounds, so I suppose I could polish them out. I was just hoping for the chrome look if I could find a nice set.

Thanks for the info...
I had most of the chrome on my KZ redone, and I polished the few misc. aluminum pieces, but I really like the chrome look on the GW, so I most likely will be making some more purchases  :-D

The green wire you mentioned is an earth/ground wire for use with a 3 terminal flasher unit. Most of the flasher units around are 2 terminal so just leave it disconnected.

Don't forget that you will have to trim the snorkel on the Air box to clear those coils. Make sure to dress the edges after your trim job.

This last one is typical of the condition of most of the jets. I spoke with the P/O yesterday about the "carb rebuild", and it was the P/O to him that had them done

In Randakk's video, he says distractions are death.
I hope that is not the case as I won't be able to finish
them by the end of the day. Soooooo many parts,
and soooooo little time
