You know you have to completely flush the old fluid out to do this right? Best way to do it is to rebuild everything. ;)

Yes, I know, thanks. Everything's being rebuilt and new lines installed. Do it right, do it once...

I've been fighting the 'gumption gremlins' this past week, so it's been slow going. I have so many 'need to do' projects that I don't know where to start, and the basement workshop looks like a tornado struck because I keep having to dig out these tools or those supplies. The whole place just needs a major 'purge!'

Back to the important stuff! I'm not really satisfied with how the brake calipers are (not) cleaning up, and I need to buy a longer air hose to use my soda blaster on them. I have everything I need to rebuild the rear shocks except for a clear workspace. The same goes for the front forks, except I haven't removed them yet as my storage unit workspace is limited, and I don't want to have the fairing and associated parts floating around unprotected for too long. I truly hate having to go through twelve unrelated tasks to get to the one I really want to be doing!

Track the work is looking excellent on the bike parts and slow is the only way to go. We used to have a saying at a place where I worked. OHIO it.... only handle it once. There's truth in that word whether working on a bike or any other project.
Current Bikes:
1967 CL175 Low production number with #802 as engine serial- winter 2019/2020 project.
1978 CB550K Very original bike with only 7499 klms from new- light cleanup and refresh pending.
1981 GL1100 Standard model - Sept 2018 start of cosmetic refresh, nice original condition.
1983 CB1000 Custom-Low mileage full cosmetic restoration back to factory new.
1984 GL1200 Standard model in showroom condition-two owner bike.
1984 CX650E Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model-excellent one owner bike.

I'm glad I'm not the only one struggling with the "gumption gremlins." I got the shop half cleaned out, and in the process located so many unfinished projects (some already started and dropped due to pressing matters) that it's still not cleaned the way I would like it to be.

It will all happen in due time, I keep telling her...
Keep it running

1978 GL1000 - almost stock - needs a head replaced, parts are ready to install!
1979 GL1000 - project for this winter? - custom "Busted"
1981 XV750H - just for fun - needs a head replaced
1983 GL1100 Standard- being resurrected
1998 V11 EV Moto Guzzi - 65th birthday present

Thanks for the encouragement... Just had to rant for a bit, I guess. I did work on cleaning up the work area a bit, so at least I can find my tools...

Just a small update to keep this thread on the first page, lol! I picked up a nice set of '83 air shocks for less than a set of the Progressive upgraded springs some time ago, so those will be going on Layla. I've been knocking around trying to get them rebuilt, but can't seem to get more than a half hour in the shop at a time. I have one shock ready for filling with ATF, and the other all cleaned up and ready to assemble. My money stash is growing again, so hopefully I can get tires and brake lines ordered before the end of the month. I'm having to split time with too many house projects... I can't believe how fast the summer is going! GRRRR!

Yes it is moving along a little too quickly for the riding season. It was a cool spring here, so it started slowly and now it is very hot and humid but good riding weather.
Glad your making progress and I usually find I hit a midway turning point where everything starts to come together quickly. Your almost there, :crosso

Got the rear shocks assembled except for the boots and rubber bushings. I'll need to go over the chrome cans with some polishing compound as there's some slight pitting and discoloration. Right now the boots are getting a cleaning treatment, then they'll get a dose of low sheen armorall...
I also made a huge mess just as I was enjoying my progress by tipping the bucket of old fluid and cleaning agents over, creating a big puddle on my basement floor. GRRR!

Spent a few hours Sunday removing the last major components to be rebuilt; the front forks. Of course, in order to do that, the fairing has to come off as well...

The to do list is slowly shrinking...
Disassemble the forks, polish the lowers, and reassemble.
Finish polishing valve and timing belt covers.
Paint and rebuild the brake calipers and master cylinders.
Drill the brake rotors.
Remove the original carbs.
Clean, clean, clean...
Remove the radiator, replace the belts, thermostat, radiator hoses, and crossover pipe o-rings.
Set the valves.
Start putting her back together!

I still need to buy tires, stainless brake lines, spark plugs, and other sundries. I'm aiming for a first ride by the end of August (only two months later than I had hoped, lol!)

Track it looks really good and the body panels and exhaust look really clean and in nice shape. Personally nothing ever goes to my plan as far as timing of a project. So you will still have lots of riding weather in August and who knows maybe an extended fall season.

I had planned on doing some soda blasting today, but the heat and humidity seems to have sucked the gumption right out of me. I did finish disassembling the forks and giving everything a good cleaning. The fork oil was pretty disgusting, with a good amount of sludge; way more than I expected. It's hard to say if the seals were changed before, but the fork oil certainly doesn't look like it.
I'll be stripping off the clear coat from the bottoms yet this evening, and probably get everything together and ready for blasting tomorrow. I guess I'm not up for any weekend wrenching marathons, lol!

Mmmmm, shiny!
I've been making very, very slow but steady progress the past couple of weeks, working on bits and pieces fifteen minutes here, an hour there. I still need to paint the brake calipers and masters, but things are moving toward a marathon assembly session!
