78 GL1000 rejuvenation!

#1

Post by Damferg »

Ok, I'm closer to the goal now; so far:
Changed oils, belts, thermostat, temp bulbs, cleaned coolant system, seat upholstery, paint job, unseased front and rear calipers, new front master cylinder, bled and vacuumed brakes, did the valve spacing on intake and exhaust, changed the push & pull throttle cables (for that had to dislodge the carb system and wigel it to de left, then I saw the intake valves and almost cried, dirty dirty son's ....) , oil filter, air filter, gas filter, some fiul hoses (the ones I could reach), starter main fuse, trottle plastic thingy on the grip. And that's it I think hippie1 action1.

Ned to change:
Clutch cable, choke cable, ignition all........ Except starter motor and fuse, rear stop light housing, mirrors (turns out there Yamaha, that's why she wasn't purring right) derust fule thank just in case, time the bike with a timing gun (no tengo, don't have, but the guys at Honda Moto Mx. will do while changing tires) oh, change tires, front fork seals, plenum filter, valves cleanup, Wana re do all the wires and connections new all do I don't think I can fin original, and have to find out what's lurking inside the engine (sounds good but you never know).

Guys at Honda think I'm mad, calling them asking for part for a 41 year old bike. México has a diferentes economy, you just don't find this things, nobody stoks this stuff except for a few learned mechanics that after a few days looking call you back and the deals don.

All work above has been don by yours truly with your help and knowledge, blogs and messages, YouTube videos Randakks also Bronko couldn't have done it without your guidance, you all are making this bike brand new for the future generations to enjoy. Thank you all!

Tried to buy stuff from Randakks last night but my Pay palls acting up I'll get them as soon as my bank and I resolve pure differences!!! So far most of it is from eBay, Amazon and a Mexican similar called MercadoLibre(mostly used).
So far so good, happy and grateful making my dream come true the great Goldwing that I dreamt of as a kid is here alive and tiking and the same year model as me! wanting to maybe add a few thousend miles or in my case kilometros kilometres.

We'll leave you with the pics of today's session.
Have a great weekend crossy.gif

Today I rode for 3 miles after a good warm-up and could not get the fan to run? Gauges at ok. I'm scared to leave it running longer after all I'm no certified mechanic and all work was done by my ✋ which now look like a hey where cheeued by dogs.
Hers a pic from today!

It puffs a little bit from the right muffler, I may not be such a good valve adjuster!!!

I am thinking that depending on the ambient temp you are likely to get the fan to kick in while it is at an idle speed approaching 1500 rpm than on a 3 mile ride while air is being forced through the rad.. I am also assuming that your temp gauge is working and not showing anything above normal operating temps. Just a thought. I do know that my fan works as the engine warms during a warm up idle situation.

If you stay right there and watch the temp gauge while it's idling you won't hurt it if you shut it down as soon as the temp gets up in the red.
I boiled over my rad twice on my 76 while trying to sync the carbs (Ya..I have no idea) and it didn't hurt it.

I've only been able to get my '78 with '75 engine to kick the fan on by leaving it idling about 15 minutes in 90F + weather. My '77 would do the same, or after a 65 mph run for 10 miles, then hitting stoplights. If it doesn't belch coolant, you should be good.

That might be, I'll check the gauge with a 7V power source and check if they go up all the way. Cables are ok.

Had to do a bit of surgery on my carbs. Installed all ney carb kit from Randakk..... Super cool!!! Now found a bunch of problems with the old carb parts, some gaskets where from other bikes.... It's all good now and the instructions that came with the kit are excellent.
I had a problem separating both the right and the left part and the carbs from the plenum but torched the casing a little bit and all but tow srews came out so had to drill them out. Some pics to make you flinch at the sight of having to find new carbs if something goes wrong!!!

See you soon with more updates!
