CX500 / Trident Police Trike Rebuild

for those of you that have M.B.S. (multiple bike syndrome) and have the "silver wing" models.
as our sponsors also have supplies for those bikes and they are popular with the "wing" crowd.

The rest of the brake lines arrived on Monday and this evening I connected all the plumbing and bled the rear brakes. Nice firm pedal. Man, I really like speed bleeders. Highly recommended.

Tomorrow evening I plan to take the trike off the jack stands, install the seat and jerry rig the temporary fuel supply so I can ride around my garage (it's BIG, about 18,000 sq ft - no kidding) to try it out. I expect to be ready for state inspection by the end of the month.

There are several of us who share ownership of the garage. It's underground with ventilation and never gets excessively hot or cold. Also has a parking lot on the roof (ground level) for which we have granted an easement to an adjacent property owner.

I bolted the seat and tank on the trike and rode it around my garage this evening. It's a lot lighter than my GL1800 trike and maneuvers much easier. This thing has a very tight turning radius. It will take some time for the new brake pads and shoes to bed themselves in and I could feel the brakes gradually improving after 15-20 minutes of accelerating and stopping while riding around the garage.

I need to kludge up a backrest for the seat but that will have to wait until later. Now to finish off the wiring, set the valves, adjust the tensioner, change the rearend oil and get this beast ready for the state inspection.

I'm cleaning up the last of the electrical stuff at this time. There was a LOT of extraneous wiring that was presumably related to the original trike conversion. A lot of it was jerry rigged crap and some of it went nowhere. I stripped that stuff out and installed a dedicated wiring loom to handle the horn, siren, lights in the rear box, etc.

This photo shows the relay assembly I built to allow selective use of the Stebel airhorn and the siren from the horn button. The fuse block will also act as a power distribution point for any future accessory wiring. The wiring shown is AWG 14. The thick black wire crossing diagonally is the power wire from the starter solenoid to the starter motor.

The police trike is almost done. Over the weekend I finished the wiring and installed the NOS Pacifico fairing which replaces the cracked original Pacifico unit. I will be ordering a replacement windshield from Gustaffson Plastics https://bikescreen.com/products/fairing ... co-aero-xp later this week. While I'm waiting on the windshield, I will be cleaning up the rear deck lid and replacing the corroded hardware.

Look'n great. Are those the hub caps sit'n in the background ? Will you apply a " logo " to the box or tank ? I like the siren.. the one I had I gave to a fellow in Chicago for his project. I'm on the search for a period piece.
In Aug we may attend the Santa Fe chapter m/c show in Kansas City. Perhaps you could show your bike there. :)

Yep, those are the hubcaps. They're in pretty rough shape. I'm going to find some nicer ones in the next week or two.

The electronic siren is what came with the trike and it's LOUD. Really LOUD. I added a switch to the fairing so I can select either the air horn or the siren when I press the horn button. The siren has a couple of different sound patterns.

Regarding a logo, I am leaning towards a Blues Brothers theme. The trike is the right color. Cop bike, cop engine, cop tires, cop lights, cop siren,... like that. I found some nice silhouette decals of Jake and Elwood that I'm thinking of placing on the side panels. Unfortunately the BDR529 license plate number is not available as a vanity plate in Missouri so I'll have to come up with something else.

The "Santa Fe" chapter of what group? If I'm not on the road for work I would consider bringing the trike to Kansas City for the show. I occasionally ride my sidecar outfit across the state. What are the dates and where in KC?

The trike is ready for state inspection and plates.

I installed a LED headlight that I acquired from SuperBright LEDs and ordered the windshield from Gustafsson Plastics. The windshield should be here in about 10 days. The replacement lock for the rear deck lid arrived and I'm just waiting for the replacement grab handles and lid supports. These aren't required for the state inspections so I will try to get the trike to a shop for the inspection this coming week.

Awesome! That looks to be quite the headlight, too. Is it motorcycle specific? I'd like to go with an LED headlight, but there seems to be quite a range in price, and I haven't done any real research on the differences. I'll look forward to a review, lol! It is allegedly motorcycle specific. It puts out a LOT of light. I'll post a review of it after I have ridden some miles with it at night. I had to make a minor modification to the lamp mounting cradle in the fairing to clear some "bump outs" on the lamp assembly - took about 20 minutes. It has a standard H4-type connector for power.

Here is the info about it: https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinf ... sion/3149/

Well, I was all set to take the trike for it's state inspection today so I could get it registered but Murphy (you remember him, don't you?) raised his ugly head. My running lights flaked out when I was getting the trike ready last night. Long story short, after several hours of troubleshooting I discovered that two of the fuse clips in the fuse holder were flakey. I cleaned up the contacts with 800 grit paper and applied a film of silicone dielectric grease and all seems well for the moment. I also ordered what appears to be a good used fuse holder assembly on eBay. If push comes to shove I will simply replace the OEM fuse holder with one that accommodates ATC fuses and be done with it.

The weather stripping/gasket for the deck lid arrived today... it took two weeks to get here!!! This is a door gasket for mid-70s to early 80s Chevy and GMC pickups. It fits perfectly. The new windshield has been shipped from Gustafsson Plastics and should arrive next Tuesday or Wednesday. I will be on the road for work next week so now I'm targeting the week of the 15th to get this machine inspected and registered.
