82 CX500 Custom is keeping the garage company

for those of you that have M.B.S. (multiple bike syndrome) and have the "silver wing" models.
as our sponsors also have supplies for those bikes and they are popular with the "wing" crowd.

82 CX500 Custom is keeping the garage company

Post by wingrider »

Hey all,

An old friend of the family had this bike for a few years, and it has sat since 05 when he moved out of state. It has been garage kept, so getting her back up and running shouldn't be to hard. He has since moved back, and even wants to help on it.

One thing I noticed right off the get go was a deep crack in one of the intake rubbers...can a person replace just the rubber, or is a whole new intake elbow in his future? It appears that they are very similar in make to the Wings manifolds...so knowing that, it will most likely have to be replaced.

Anyone successfully changed one?

I believe that these items are no longer available from Honda and you have to be careful buying second hand as there's a lot of different models which aren't interchangeable.
One of the most successful methods of repair is to use Rescue Tape. This stuff sticks to itself really well and once wrapped around the rubber tube, it will seal it very well.
I've heard of people using it and it's lasted a couple of years.

I've found the same cracks in my CX650C intakes. I took black liquid vinyl and applied it to the cracks. Works well with torn seat covers also. Same stuff used for electrical coating of connectors and skinned wiring.
The difficult can be done in a day. The impossible takes a little longer, if you don't know it can't be done.

Thanks for the replies. I had wondered if I could repair it...Will have to look into the Rescue tape. If all else fails, we will attempt to seal it up with something in the garage.

The liquid vinyl can be found at most Hardware and Automotive stores. Many many uses for it. Comes in several colors.

Good to know! I have liquid black tape, but for this, I am not sure it would work. Heck, may have to look at the bottle, maybe that that stuff is vinyl.

IF it's not the liquid vinyl for electrical and you want to try the Rescue Tape, it may well be found at the Big Box store also. Our local plumbing-HVAC supplier has it, a small roll for $10.

I used the liquid electrical tape on my old CB500T many years ago, ran that way through at least 3 other owners with no leaks.

Thanks for the help guys! I need to do these repairs as safe and inexpensive, (read no job for owner currently) as I can, but still feel good that I got it back on the road for him...without worrying that I cut any corners.

Alrighty...well, it is up and running good. Carbs cleaned, tank fresh, new plugs and adjusted the valves.

I put new tires on it, and rebuilt the forks. Mostly new fluids throughout...seems it had a coolant leak...just touched the drain and it broke the knob off...hence the leak. Thought I might be able to get it out of the garage this weekend, but it seems the master cylinder gave up the ghost. I decided to change the fluid, and the lever got real hard. Figured the return hole might be plugged. Tried cleaning the MC(which was crusty), and now it won't pump any fluid.

So, question is, should I rebuild the current MC, or buy a cheapy off of EBay and just replace the whole shootin' match?

I've gotten several of the "cheapie" MCs off ebay. Personally, I think most of them were better than OE Hondas. The price of the aftermarket MCs were less than the cost of a rebuild kit, they didn't have plastic reservoirs, and you can have your choice of black, silver, or chrome finish.

Well, she's all done...owner is going to pick it up this weekend. Seems small compared to the behemoths in the garage. :-D

Always nice to get one back on the road....

Owner was going to pick it up today, but with the threat of rain, opted to wait. So, I took it out this am to be sure everything was doing what it should, and noticed it's gearing is a bit different than what I was used to. Boy this old girl revs high...

Well, I decided it wasn't going to rain, so I offered to ride it down to his place. About 35 miles, so nice little jaunt. I was going to keep to the back roads, and get on the freeway at a place where it is 60 mph. About 5 miles from home, I am in a down pour, but see light sky in the direction I am heading...so ride on! Mostly dry by the time I get there. :IDTS:

They must have changed the gearing somewhere along the way, cause I don't remember my 78 CX turning 6700 rpm at 70 mph. Maybe I just don't remember that far back, but seemed that one was a little more long legged.

Time will tell how much he runs this one...good to learn again, but wouldn't be surprised if he eventually upgrades to a newer/bigger bike. Maybe I can talk him into an old Wing...he seems to like the direction I am going with mine.

Good that she's back on the road. I love seeing old bikes kept up and put to good use.
The gearing on the 500s, I've found to be usually 1000rpm per 10mph. Good for town use, not ideal for me for long distance high speed runs, but some folks don't seem to mind that. The 650s gearing is a little higher, which is good, being they have so much torque to them. I only wish the old Wings had a 6th gear or were geared a little higher.
