the tubes are bigger in diameter so it is not a direct cross. Will require new trees.

Re: will gl1200 forks fit a 78 gl1000?
I have gl 1200 forks on my 81 gl1100. I used 1500 fork tubes and lower clamp, 1200 top clamp, 1100 stem, 1100 fender, 1200 fender brackets, 1200 legs rim and brakes, 1500 progressive springs, I used these parts because I had them here but I believe the 1200 lower clamp and stem would fit. Doing this on a 1000, The stem and bearings would be the part that may have to be changed.

Holy multi-cultural Goldwing!!!!.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.
