The one on my 75 and the one on my 76 both act just like that. Seems like there is a real hard spot right before it engages

8) I have two kickstart levers, one from my 75 and one from my 77. The 77 kickstarter looks like it was chromed.........makes timing/valve adjustment easier

Actually they're zinc plated. I've gotten them redone for about $10 at a local plating shop.

As for the timing, I think it's great!

I find that just like starting my old cb450 , if I feel for when the kick start will engage the motor w/o slack it will start with easy .

(little help here ,look for top dead center is that right ? )

I need to do a light rotation of the motor with the kick lever till I feel the compression of the motor .It that point I will release the kick lever , then one easy kick from the top will do it . Maybe a few more if I have not started it in over two weeks ( And yes I know better then that :) )

Side note , My one GL I also have that hard spot at the top of the kick but after that it is fine .

My other 3 do not have this .Are very very easy to kick over and will return to top .

LOL The first time I tried to start my GL , I did put a lot force into it and found it was amazingly easy to kick over and only needed light pressure to rotate the motor

IF your starter is not working or not engaging the motor .. when you try to kick start also push the starter button at the same time ..this will send the full 12v to the coils ....

Makes starting much more easy ..

If you want to use the kicker and the bike has been sitting you should hand fill the carbs and run a jumper to the coil. I did that to test my LTD when I got it and it worked fine. With empty carbs I'd expect maybe 50 kicks. Probably best to find a hill with carbs empty.

I've had a Ural and a BMW with the same style of kick start. Never got them to work either. Thank goodness for electric start and big hills, well at least when you're at the top!

My Chang is easy with the kick start but the tank is way above the carbs, stock ones have ticklers.
