Antares Launch Wednesday

Weather looks good for the launch from Wallops Island this coming Wednesday. May have to sneak up there and watch.

Go for it and hope it does not get scrubbed. Seeing a launch never gets old.

I lived in Central Florida for many years and visited Canaveral on numerous occasions for shuttle launches. In fact, launches were visible from the Orlando area quite readily. Also always a thrill were the double sonic booms when that puppy was coming back in! Saw the Challenger disaster in ‘86 from the parking lot at work during lunchtime.

Nowadays, I have to wait for the much less common (and advertised) launches from Vandenberg. Luckily as an astronomer, I am often in the field at night when they do these launches. Temporarily disrupts our observing sessions, of course…

Sad I missed out on the Shuttle stuff. I have seen a few Rocket launches from Wallops here at the house in Norfolk, night time launches even this far away are amazing. I am right at 80 miles as the crow flies. I have never been up close to one so it is time.

Obviously, Vandenberg launches are low in the west from Arizona, but our winter observing site is about 10 miles from the California border, so they are plainly visible and spectacular.

Last year we went to KSS and toured it for six days. On the final day, we saw a Falcon 9 launch from the Saturn 5 center. Also saw Falcon Heavy do a hot test - wow!

Back in 80's while in Hawaii I got tasked with moving a solid fuel rocket from Oahu to PMRF Barking Sands on Kauai. It was longer that the cabin of my H-53 Helo. It came out of a refrigerated unit and had to be loaded and delivered to a refrigerated unit on the other island before the fuel reached 80 degrees and became unstable. We got it done but it was a scary ride for sure.

Cool day. Many many Nerds there!! The Visitors center is like 4 miles away and that is where they want everyone but I did some snooping and found a place the geeks go. 2.1 miles away and very nice. There were probably 200 or better people there at an abandon Ferry Landing. No exaggeration but I feel safe saying there was well over a million dollars worth of cameras there
