GL1000 Hardtail Project

#1

Post by shammon »

Hi, Andy here from Glasgow, Scotland.

I have two Gl1000 bikes a 1977 which I fully restored in 2018. And a 1979 Hardtail project bike.

I recently got the 79 which had been an incomplete rolling project bike and its got a bit still to so hopefully guidance when required will help. The bike has a rear Triumph Rocket 3 rear wheel and Caliper set up. The shaft has been extended as well.
I was lucky enough to have a custom drive housing come with is that Im presently fitting ( which will req to be supported)

Just working my way through the electrics and then get it running correctly. over her the DVLA (Government dept for cars and bikes etc) is the step Im also dealing with to get it legal for the road when its ready.

Some issues is that I would welcome any ones advise on what type of smaller air filter I can use to fit in as its a lot smaller area, as well as suggestions on wither to weld on new foot pegs or forward controls, which I fear the block will restrict. any way heres a few pics of the bike

Welcome! That's a very interesting project! Looks like some quality workmanship, too.

At one point in the past, there was a fellow offering a bolt on adapter plate that would allow use of a pod type filter. It was basically a flat plate that utilized the stock air box mounting surface and bolt location with a flange in the center that allowed a filter to be installed using a normal hose clamp.
I've kept that design (with a few modifications) in mind for much the same situation you're dealing with. If the flange were at an angle to the plate, one could conceivably make a setup similar to an automotive 'cold air intake' kit that would allow a more remote filter location...

I used a GM 3800 (I think) air filter. It is rectangular with neoprene to seal. Any suitable method to “pinch it over the opening will work. It’s not very visible. It will miss the space of the stock filter plenum and might take some jetting tweaks.

The angle on the ujoints is pretty aggressive. No one has found a suitable replacement for them yet, except Sandy. He used a standard joint for a steering link. Some question it’s high speed reliability as it wasn’t designed for this, but it’s several years since he posted it. Hard tail: it might be fine. Yeeeeeears ago some else did this and left the shaft exposed. It wasn’t offset like yours.

I agree on the forward controls. Unless you’re a seven footer, it would be pretty uncomfortable—-imo.

Keep us posted on your progress. Love seeing other ideas.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Not sure if you have a "noise pass by" test or not. But a great air filter quiets down engine noise a bunch so consider that if you have to pass such a test.

If you look at the unique carb section here there are a number of smaller air boxes that fit on the solo carbs that could work if you are able to cut a baseplate to fit. I had one on a Solex carb that would probably work. If you were stateside I could ship it to you but not sure about overseas. I can post a picture if you like.

Regarding driveshaft - I used a company called Tom Woods to make custom driveshafts for my jeep, They were very reasonable. I bet they could do one for your wing if you wanted to go that route. With the drop and side shift in your driveline you might consider a double cardan joint setup. I had to go that route when I lifted my Jeep (8.5 inch lift).

Edit to add: not sure if you are wedded to the stock carbs, but there is a manifold that would allow mounting Twin Weber carbs outboard over the heads. Wog’s Wild Child build (on this site) uses them. I think Randakk still sells them.

Really cool idea you got going. Looking forward to the progress.

I used an open filter on mine for awhile. I just cut the base of the stock air filter housing down to fit, I think, about a 6" diameter filter. Then used the chrome top that came with the setup I bought and threw that base in the scrap bin.

Thanks for the reply's.

Does anyone have photos of forward control set up on the GL1000 or GL1100, Ideally looking for how its fitted to the frame and connections to allow it to operate the gear and rear brake.
I seen "Jim Customs" in USA once sold a kit but there is sadly no photos of this or info as the site is no longer available.
I have seen a few photos on line but if any one has it on theirs and could upload close up pics please to give me an idea of how to fit the same to mine inc what mounting plate was used or made.

Thanks :-D

Here's a link to some pics from a member... unfortunately, he hasn't been active since 2010, and I don't think he had a thread posted about the work. Might give you some ideas...
